Dunanney Care Home in Newtownabbey had the pleasure of welcoming back old friends 'Rhythm and Movement' in August.

Rhythm & Movement are a Portstewart based musical therapy company. They provide sixty minute workshop sessions for participants of all ages and abilities. Bespoke programmes are designed which ensure stimulation, motivation and promotion of interaction amongst participants. A typical session could include listening to music, upper limb exercises, playing musical instruments, use of sparkle sticks and batons.

Residents at Dunanney Care Home may benefit from the sessions in a number of ways: reduction of stress and anxiety levels, improved blood flow to vital organs, oxygenation of cells which assists stimulating energy flow; memory stimulation and lastly fun and interaction with fellow residents!

Music therapist, Philomena opened her Pandora's box of musical mysteries surrounded by eager participants at the workshop. Items distributed, residents made like 'Belfast Giants' cheerleader squad, shaking and moving their pom-poms to the music.

A competitive edge was introduced to the workshop as opposing Dunanney Care Home teams battled it out in the musical knowledge quiz.

Residents then tried their hand in orchestra conduction. Musical melodies were whipped into shape as batons whizzed through the air. Great conductors of world orchestras such as the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra would find it hard to match the skill demonstrated by some during this August session!

Joanne McTernaghan, Activity Coordinator at Dunanney, said: "It is wonderful to see so many residents get involved in the musical activities. It is always a pleasure to have Rhythm and Movement visit with us."
