Residents at The Hillings residential home in Eaton Socon, St Neots, have enjoyed a fun and creative visit from a group of local students who helped them ‘pimp’ their ‘zimmers’ and wheelchairs.

Students from Bushmead Primary School visited the residents, many of whom live with dementia, to take part in the exciting creative project. The children spent time decorating the residents’ zimmer frames and wheelchairs to personalise them with fun accessories, flags, bunting, fairy lights and stickers and to make them individually recognisable for each resident.

The Hillings residential home is part of the Healthcare Homes group, which launched the ‘Pimp my Zimmer’ initiative across its 35 homes earlier this year. Every year, the activities co-ordinators set group-wide challenges, which look to provide fun and engaging events and opportunities for residents, including those that enable the homes to interact with their local communities.

The aim of the challenge is to bring together staff, residents and their friends and families and members of each home’s local community to design and create personalised, eye-catching, instantly-recognisable zimmer frames and wheelchairs.

Manager of The Hillings, Deb Wiltshire said, “We have enjoyed such a lovely time with the children. They all got very involved with the challenge, working with the residents to create some lovely designs, which have made each zimmer, wheelchair and even walking stick, very individual and instantly recognisable to each resident.

“We asked the school to come and take part as it’s very important for us to organise opportunities for our residents to engage with members of the community, both young and old. We like to come up with new and interesting ways to make life at the home fun and enjoyable, and projects such as this provide real entertainment for everyone at The Hillings.”

The Hillings provides high quality residential care to adults, including those living with dementia. It is based on Grenville Way in Eaton Socon. For more information call 01480 214020.
