On 11th January our resident and motorsport enthusiast, Derek, received his Wishing Well wish in the form of a surprise trip to Brooklands museum – the birthplace of British motorsport and aviation.
Derek had previously mentioned that in his earlier years he had wished to go to Brooklands to see the race track. It was a huge interest for him as his father had worked there as a mechanic on the race cars, so our team here at Ashurst Park Care Home decided to make it happen! We contacted Brooklands museum who swiftly got back to us and kindly gave Derek a complimentary ticket, wanting to know any memorable stories that he may have about his father.
The museum had an impressive collection of motors - there were race cars, aeroplanes and the famous Concord, as well as a healthy selection of motor bikes which Derek showed particular interest in. We later found out this was due to Derek's time spent as a competitive racer - he took part in the Isle of Man TT, amongst other races on his Norton 500cc motorbike.
“It was a fantastic day out for Derek, he really seemed to take everything in and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, there was so much for him to see and do and it was lovely to hear so many stories as this day had bought back so many lovely memories for Derek.” - Peter Yates (driver).
Right from the beginning we try to get an understanding of our residents, finding out about their life story and getting to know the things they would really like to do via our Wishing Well Programme so that we can help to make their wishes a reality.
