Oaken Holts annual trip to Wytham Wood

Last Updated: 02 May 2018 @ 00:00 AM

One of the annual trips that the residents of Oaken Holt in Farmoor enjoy is a drive around Wytham Woods to see all the bluebells in bloom. They have a very good relationship with Nigel Fisher, the warden of Wytham woods and are very privileged to have access in a vehicle.

The display is absolutely stunning, and this year seems to be a very good one. The residents were blown away by the vivid blue of the bluebells, although some are pink! At Oaken Holt they are surrounded by Wytham Wood and Bean Wood and the wildlife and flora and fauna are amazing.

There are pipistrelle bats that roost in the woods but visit in the evening and put on a beautiful display catching insects in the twilight hours.

The wildlife strays across the grounds so residents have seen barn owls, muntjac deer and foxes to name but a few. The birds also visit, such as nut hatches, sparrows, blue tits, coal tits, robins and wrens. Due to the abundance of trees there are plenty of squirrels, rooks, jackdaws and crows.

The sunset from the front of the main house is stunning. The sun goes down over the hill and neighbouring farmoor reservoir.

Oaken Holt are very lucky to be located in a most beautiful spot and able to enjoy all the nature around us. The residents are looking forward to the summer and being able to sit in the grounds and enjoy the sunshine and maybe a glass of pimms.
