Leeds Team Scoop Bupa's 'Care Home of The Year'

Bupa’s Sunnyview House clinched the title, winning a £10,000 prize

Following a nationwide search, Sunnyview House in Leeds has been named Bupa’s Care Home of the Year 2018.

As well as the coveted title, colleagues at the home shared a £10,000 cash prize as a thank you for their continued hard work. Sunnyview House colleagues had some stiff competition, beating more than 100 entries to clinch the title. Ultimately though, judges selected the home due to their overwhelming commitment to residents. As a direct result of these efforts, the home has witnessed a fantastic turnaround in its performance over the past year.

During visits to the home, judges were overwhelmed by the positive feedback from residents, friends and families who shared personal stories of how staff had gone above and beyond to help them.

They also praised the home for its strong links with local charities and community groups, including regular Macmillan Coffee Mornings where both residents and colleagues bake and sell cakes to fundraise for the charity.

The home also hosts regular drop-in dementia cafes. They welcome members of the local community, along with the home’s own residents, to provide practical advice and support for both those living with, and caring for those with, the condition.

Joan Elliott, Managing Director of Bupa Care Homes, said: “As soon as you step in to Sunnyview House you know that you’re somewhere special. There’s a strong sense of community and you can tell that the team genuinely care about the residents and each other.

“Everyone at the home has been working so hard, and it’s brilliant to see that it’s not only reaching but exceeding the high standards we expect. From the nurses and carers, to the chefs and the cleaners, everybody pulls together as a team. I’m delighted that they’ve been recognised with this award.”

Integral to the home’s success has been Susan Carter, Home Manager at Sunnyview House. Brought on in 2017, Susan has appointed a number of new colleagues as she focused the home on providing the highest quality care.

Reflecting on the award, Susan added: “I’ve always been proud of my team at Sunnyview and count myself lucky that I get to see the heart-warming lengths they go to just to make our residents feel at home. It’s fantastic to be recognised like this. We’re all thrilled and it’ll only inspire us to keep on raising the bar in future.”

Sunnyview House has over 100 colleagues who shared the £10,000 prize. The team also chose to donate £500 to the residents’ fund, used for celebrations and activities at the home, while giving a further £500 to Beeston ‘Live at Home Scheme’ – a group which runs daily activities for older people in the region. Volunteers from the Scheme have been invited to the home’s Christmas celebrations, where they’ll be presented with the donation.

Bupa has more than 130 care homes in the UK, as well as seven Richmond Villages – a collection of retirement villages. Other finalists were Bupa Southlands in Harrogate, Bupa Knights’ Grove in Southampton and Richmond Village Nantwich.
