The Majesticare annual Christmas Conference

When Majesticare does a Christmas Conference we do it like no other and this year we are celebrating 20 years of Majesticare. Dr Raj Pratap established Majesticare 20 years ago based on many of the values which are core to Majesticare today - happiness, trust, creativity, heart and family. His son Roger Pratap (director) continues to proudly expand Majesticare, developing his father’s vision and values and upholding them in every single one of Majesticare’s homes. We are proud to look back on Majesticare’s 20 years and will continue to do so as we launch our 'Cup Half Full' campaign next year in honour of Majesticare’s founder, Dr Raj Pratap.

We pride ourselves on our core values and stay true to them. We think outside the box when it comes to big team-building events like our Christmas Conference. Keeping staff engaged and motivated is considered key and attention to detail is everything but above all else, the Majesticare Christmas Conference must be fun! Will’s Wheel of Happiness, hosted by facilities, health and safety lead Will White, kicked off the conference and provided light entertainment and energy throughout the day giving staff the opportunity to win a variety of prizes. The Heart Cart brought us lots of snacks to fuel us throughout the day and we put our trust in the hands of our fellow teammates to design a ball gown fit for royalty, out of newspaper…

Sometimes we must embrace the ridiculous!

Caroline Roberts of Welltower was the first of our guests to present on the day and following on from last year’s presentation, Caroline talked about 'How to Achieve Outstanding'. This gave the teams the opportunity to showcase what each of their homes does to go above and beyond for their residents. It created a discussion between the homes and gave them the chance to share their unique creative ideas and to gather feedback as a collective on what improvements they would like to see in place by this time next year.

Each and every team demonstrated their commitment to continuous improvement to achieve greatness for their home’s residents and staff. Hilary Woodhead (executive director of NAPA) emphasised the importance of a whole-home approach and making every interaction meaningful. Hilary’s workshop enabled staff to listen to one another and find something out about each other, then taking that bit of information and evolving it into an activity or meaningful experience. Our wonderful staff found this very thought-provoking and came up with some amazing ideas to take back to their homes.

As part of a whole-home approach (and for some fun!) we challenged each of the homes to remake a scene from their favourite Christmas film. It was a challenge like no other, everyone involved including staff, residents, visitors and volunteers enjoyed each minute of filming and watching the end results. These films were showcased during the conference and it is safe to say each and every member of the Majesticare family deserves an Oscar, they were spectacular and quite frankly hilarious. Not quite your average day to day task, but this is Majesticare!

We were privileged to have Neil Eastwood, of Sticky People, attend to launch our new employee referral scheme, Care Friends, which aims to recognise and reward our staff for staff referrals. Recruitment is an important focus for Majesticare as we recruit based on our company values. What better way to find staff who share our values than from those who already live our values? We want to ensure we have the best teams in place possible. This is what our homes deserve. Acknowledging our staff for helping us to create the best possible team is important to us so we have chosen to launch a programme which includes generous monetary rewards for recruitment success.

To close the Christmas Conference we had the one and only Big Ian Donaghy. Ian said, “they normally bring me in to energise a room, so this is going to be easy”. Ian brought us to tears with some touching, heartfelt and thought-provoking stories about people living with dementia. This emphasised the importance of our Continue Being Me campaign in which we ensure that everyone is treated as an individual with their unique needs and preferences. Ian went on to finish with a truly remarkable sing-along, getting every person in the room on their feet and singing together as the big Majesticare family we are.

It’s safe to say the Majesticare Christmas Conference 2019 was like no other and the feedback from staff was fantastic. “The atmosphere was brilliant”, “interesting presentations and activities, and lots of fun in-between”. We look forward to doing it all again next year!
