Celebrating Shakespeare's birthday at Ashlyn Care Home

The residents at Ashlyn Care Home have been taking part in a series of activities and celebrations during this 'lockdown' period. With people across the UK told to stay inside their homes, new schemes have been introduced across the group to keep everyone in good spirits.

One of these new schemes is 'The best seat in the House', which involves singing and clapping along to a virtual performance on the TV. This simple yet effective activity is well enjoyed at Ashlyn as it mimics the usual group sessions they have with visiting entertainers.

The home has also been joining in with national events and celebrations, keeping the residents in touch with society and in good spirits. The most recent occasion they celebrated was Shakespeare's birthday. Although his birthday is not officially known, it's internationally celebrated on the 23rd of April.

The residents at Ashlyn love reading poetry and are familiar with most of his plays, so he has a special place in the hearts.

To celebrate, the team gathered some of his well-known sonnets and gave them out for the residents to read. This created a conversation about his work and what some of the resident's favourites were. Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet and Macbeth were some of the plays mentioned, which people agreed were his most popular.

From studying Shakespeare at school to visiting the Globe Theatre later in life, celebrating his birthday certainly brought back some fond memories.

In the afternoon, the residents headed into the garden to continue 'The Bard's' birthday celebrations, with tea, coffee and cake. With the sun shining down too, it was the perfect way to end a positive day!
