Dennis had been a resident at Bessingby Hall for approximately 18 months, and during that time, Carl, the Deputy Manager, had developed a lovely bond with him and his wife, Jean.
Jean and their daughter Denise became part of the Bessingby Hall family. As regular visitors, they had come to know everyone and in particular, Carl.
Sadly during the lockdown, Dennis became very poorly and was taken down the route of fast track palliative care. This decision meant that only one visitor could see him, and sadly neither his wife nor daughter were able to, due to shielding.
A few weeks ago, Dennis's condition worsened; Carl contacted Jean and Denise to tell them that he didn't feel Dennis had very long.
Carl exchanged contact details with his daughter Denise, to enable her to make a video call to Dennis to say goodbye.
Carl then decided to drive to Jean's house so she could use his smartphone to enable her to do the same as Denise.
Carl set up a video call to Emily, another member of the team at Bessingby Hall, and who had remained with Dennis so that Jean was able to say a final farewell via a video call.
Jean was very grateful that with the use of Carl's phone, she had been able to say goodbye to her much-loved husband. After Jean had finished her call, Carl returned to Bessingby Hall to finish his shift.
That wasn't the end of the story, Bessingby Hall had received a donation of knitted hearts, so Carl and Emily picked three that were the same and took a picture of Dennis with his as he lay comfortably in bed. They then delivered the other two to Denise and Jean, after their shift.
A small significant symbol that offered both wife and daughter some emotional benefit, when Dennis passed away.
Carl said; "When I spoke to Jean, after Dennis sadly passed away, she said 'she will never forget what we did for her, never! And that she will be forever in our debt' and Denise also said 'I cannot thank you and Emily enough for your kindness on daddy's last evening.'
This is personal care; this is care at Bessingby Hall.
