A Berkshire-based care home resident received an astonishing 360 birthday cards this week, after carers at Thatcham Court Bupa Care Home, called out for members of the community to help him celebrate his 100th birthday.

The home’s original goal was to receive 100 cards for every birthday Peter Browne had celebrated, so they were overwhelmed to be able to present him with 360 cards and presents from the people of Berkshire and further afield; the furthest being from Australia. He also received cards from; The Queen, Mayor of Thatcham, local MP, Valley Police Station, students from Newbury College, children from Shaw Donnington Brownies and St Bartholomew’s school and many more. Local schools and community groups even gifted Peter Browne with parcels, photo frames and a book with a personalised bookmark with his regiment colours. A cake was also donated by Cup Cakes by Daisy.

Peter turned 100 on 10th October and to celebrate; the home put on a party, complete with a buffet supper and his favourite dessert, trifle. Cupcakes by Daisy also kindly donated a birthday cake. Making his big day extra special, Thatcham Court also arranged for Peter’s family to come for an outdoor visit and raise a toast to him reaching the milestone.

Peter is a proud father of two, grandfather of one, and is now a great grandfather, as his first great grandson, Max, was born earlier this year. Peter described Max’s birth to be one of the most memorable moments of his life, alongside becoming a Captain in the Royal Artillery.

When asked about celebrating his 100th birthday and the cards he received, Peter said: “I am absolutely amazed by the number of cards and gifts I have received. I am very grateful to everyone who was kind enough to get in touch. Reaching 100 is very special and reading through these lovely cards has certainly made it an extraordinary day.”

Home Manager, Tammy New, said: “The number of cards Peter received for his birthday this year truly symbolises how much the local community has come together over the last few months. We try to make every birthday special at Thatcham Court but, with the help of everyone who got involved, this is definitely one to remember.”
