Residents and staff at a care home in Barnet have come together to celebrate a 100th birthday.

Marjorie Barde turned 100 on Friday 23rd April and enjoyed a party with fellow residents and staff at Hadley Lawns Bupa Care Home, where she has lived for the past two years.

Carers at the home decorated the lounge with birthday balloons and banners, and the celebrations were accompanied by entertainment from a local singer, as well as Marjorie's favourite Carribean food, and a homemade birthday cake.

To mark the special day, Marjorie received a visit from her nephew, Justin, followed by a zoom call with her niece, Holly who lives in the USA. Marjorie also opened cards from the local community including, Summerswood Primary School and a congratulatory card from Her Majesty, The Queen for reaching her 100th year.

When asked about celebrating her 100th birthday this year, Marjorie said: “It’s a blessing to have reached my 100th year and to celebrate the day with the wonderful people here at Hadley Lawns. In my two years of living here, I’ve truly felt at home and I’d like to thank the staff, residents and everyone involved in making this such a special day and one to remember.”

Marjorie is part of the Windrush generation, moving to England at aged 19 from Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago. She worked various jobs before becoming a Nurse, and then eventually followed her passion in becoming a Midwife. Marjorie highlights the importance of self-improvement and constant learning at any age and says if she had the opportunity, she would still like to go back into Nursing and Midwifery.

Sharing her secret on how to live a long, happy life, Marjorie said: “In this life, you have to be willing to try things and get out of your comfort zone. Following that, I’d say generally just be good to people. Be as friendly and welcoming as you can be because that energy will always be reciprocated and that is what keeps you going. It’s nice to be nice.”

Home Manager at Hadley Lawns Bupa Care Home, Reni Philip, added: “Marjorie is an absolute joy to be around and we’re extremely pleased to have helped celebrate her 100th birthday here at Hadley Lawns. We’re like her extended family and I’m so honoured to have been a part of her reaching this milestone. The team here at Hadley Lawns did their upmost to make today memorable for Marjorie and it’s so rewarding to see how happy we have made her.”
