Mervyn’s story: a life fulfilled at Sweyne Court

Everyone living at Sweyne Court Care Home in Essex feels very honoured to have Dame Mervyn Redding CStJ, DCCSts, FRSA residing with them at the home.

Mervyn was born in Shoeburyness to a Royal Artillery family and was locally educated at Westcliff High School for girls.

Mervyn’s professional career was largely with the Ministry of Defence until her early retirement in 1995. She was a Chief Welfare Officer, managing 30 other Welfare Officers and 12 teams across one third of the country. She also spent 10 years as the Senior Administrator at the Atomic Weapons Establishment at Foulness Island. Mervyn had many roles throughout her career and was also a qualified teacher, providing first aid courses to local colleges and organisations.

Mervyn was the Secretary General and the Almoner of the Hospitaller Order of St Lazarus in the UK: an international charity involved with leprosy, skin disorders and the support of burns victims. She holds the appointment of Secretary for the registered company, the St Lazarus Foundation, and for a time was the Receiver General for the Grand Bailiwick of England and Wales of that order, together with being the Commander of the Commandery of Londinium.

Mervyn recently celebrated her birthday with everyone living at Sweyne Court, and they made sure that the day was as special as her. Everyone celebrated her life with cake and snacks and a song, and she named it, “one of the best birthdays ever”.
