Gold Care Homes provide Virtual Dementia Bus experience

Team and family members were invited to gain a valuable insight into what life is like living with Dementia via the Virtual Dementia Bus experience at Partridge House on Tuesday 30th May 2022.

Invented 25 years ago in America by Professor PK Beville, Training 2 CARE, the UK partners provide an activity facility, where participants are asked to conduct tasks wearing specialist equipment including dementia goggles, head equipment, touch sensitive gloves and shoe insoles in order to try and replicate the sensory impact when living with dementia. In addition, the training touches on emotional feelings experienced which may help to explain why we see people living with dementia behaving in ways that may seem hard for us to understand.

This worldwide, scientifically and medically proven method of giving a person with a healthy brain an experience of what dementia might be like, allows delegates to enter the world of the person and understand simple changes that can be made to daily functions and surrounding environments, including noise reduction, use of colour, appropriate signage, verbal and physical approaches and much more.

Gold Care Homes have appointed Training 2 CARE to conduct multiple training days across a selection of their 26 homes over the next few months, enabling all staff and family members who are interested to learn more from this valuable opportunity, with the aim to change the lives of residents living with dementia in our care.

Sam Varnals, Learning and Development Manager said ‘ By accessing the Virtual Dementia Tours our team can gain an in depth understanding of what it's like living with Dementia. The equipment and video supports in understanding first-hand what a resident can feel, see and hear every day, giving us a better insight to adapt our practices within our homes.’

Ravi Gidar, Managing Director at Gold Care Homes said: “We are incredibly proud to be working in partnership with Training2Care to achieve our joint aim of making transformational changes to the way care is provided.’
