Carpet bowls is not a just a game played in care homes, it is a well loved and respected sport, a variant of lawn bowls that is played indoors. Originating in England, it is most popular in the South of England, however it is played at League and County level in the midlands amongst other places.
We take our bowls very seriously indeed, we even have our own team. The nature of the game means that we can play anytime, day or night, come rain or shine. The rules are not as strict as that of outdoor bowls and we don’t have uneven ground to contend with.
We play bowls a lot at Westhill, it is a little addictive, for every throw that goes astray there is a competitive desire to do better and to get our hands on the trophy. Bowls is a common interest, many of us enjoy it and would play it every day given the chance.
There are many activities going on at Westhill, trips, pamper sessions, art classes, pub lunches and we enjoy them all but our favourite is the bowls and I have to say, we’ve become pretty good at it.
