When we share our videos and photographs, we don’t do so to collect likes, we do it to share our adventures with our residents’ families, and their friends and to demonstrate to anyone who is contemplating life in a care home that it is time to throw away the misconceptions and see just how wonderful life can be.
Having said that, obviously it is nice when people click the like button, it lets our team know that they are on the right track and even more importantly, it lets our residents know that they are still connected to the community, and that there are people out there who delight in being part of their journey.
Last month we took a video of our beloved Pammy playing the piano, this was not a one off, Pammy plays regularly for her fellow residents and both they and the team enjoy singing along. We posted the video on our Facebook page knowing that it would be popular with our followers, we expected a few nice comments, words that we could share with Pammy, what we did not expect was that it would be seen by over 7 million people, that more than 11,000 people would leave a comment and that more than 250,000 people would react to it.
We don’t share these stories hoping that they will go viral, we share them to raise a smile, Pammy didn’t play the piano hoping that she would become an internet sensation, she played it to entertain her friends. Everything that goes on within these four walls is to make life better, to care, to enable, to connect, that is the message that we are trying to convey with our online content, we want families to click on our page and see that their loved ones are happy, fulfilled and living their best lives, the fact that sometimes we reach whole communities, the fact that perfect strangers living miles away are moved by what we share is quite humbling and the smile on Pammy’s face as we read to her the wonderful comments was priceless.
