St Mary’s Riverside Care Home in Hessle, near Hull, is proud to announce that it has been awarded the Veteran Friendly Framework (VFF) status. This prestigious accreditation highlights our commitment to providing exceptional care and support to veterans, addressing their specific practical, emotional, and social needs to enhance their overall well-being.

The VFF is an innovative program throughout England designed to improve the quality of care for veterans in residential settings by providing specialised training and resources to care homes. By achieving this status, St Mary’s Riverside demonstrates its capability to offer personalized care that honours the unique experiences and needs of our veteran residents.

To achieve this distinguished status, St Mary’s Riverside Care Home met eight rigorous standards established by the VFF. These standards cover a range of care aspects, including the integration of Armed Forces status within individual care plans, reducing social isolation, and providing easy access to vital support services like the local Royal British Legion branch and other veteran-focused charities.

Laura Barnsley, the Home Manager, expressed her enthusiasm about the VFF accreditation, underscoring our commitment to person-centred care. She encourages residents and their families to share any past or present military affiliations to ensure care remains bespoke and inclusive.

Laura also pointed out the deep-rooted military history in Hull, noting the significant number of veterans in the community and emphasising the local importance of this accreditation to St Mary’s mission of effectively serving those who served.

The VFF initiative is supported by notable Armed Forces charities such as Royal Star & Garter and the Royal British Legion, along with the NHS Veterans’ Covenant Healthcare Alliance (VCHA), with funding from the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust.

Kathryn Glass, the VFF Project Lead at Royal Star & Garter, praised St Mary’s for its dedication to improving care for veterans, stating, "This commitment is a testament to their ongoing enhancement of person-centred care for veteran residents and their partners."

At St Mary’s Riverside Care Home, we are excited to continue our tradition of excellence in care and remain dedicated to meeting the needs of our veteran residents, ensuring they are treated with the respect, dignity, and support they deserve.
