Staff and residents at Barchester’s Winchester House Care Home in Wouldham, Kent are over the moon because one of their much-loved residents, Kath Baines has been honoured by the Wrens’ Association. Kath joined the Wrens (Women’s Royal Navy Service) in 1942 and was based initially at Chatham Dockyard for training. She was then stationed at Sheerness as an anti-aircraft gunner - trying to stop enemy aircraft in the Thames estuary. However, she wasn't a very good shot and became a shorthand typist for the base instead. She left the Wrens at the end of the war but has always retained her membership. As the longest serving member, Kath was invited by the Wrens’ Association to attend their Annual General Meeting which took place on HMP President at St Katherine’s Dock in London. She was treated like royalty, greeted by all the members and given a standing ovation which reduced her to tears. Kath was presented with a limited edition centenary vase by the President of the Association and a speech about her life as a Wren was read out.
