Help Hilda celebrate her 105th Birthday!

When Hilda Jackson celebrates her 105th birthday later this month she will do so with her own 'rave' party with glow sticks and a disco - the same way she celebrated her 104th birthday last year at Holbrook Hall Residential Home, where she is the oldest resident.

Staff at the care home are hoping that people will send Hilda, who originates from Ripley, birthday cards to help her celebrate her big day on Tuesday, February 25. A care home spokesman said: "Hilda has lived at Holbrook Hall Residential Home for just over two years, she is eager to get involved in all the activities we do at Holbrook from knitting to axe throwing (with foam axes).

"She enjoyed it when we visited Filey last year, as we walked along the sea front, she said ‘I never thought I’d see the beach again’ - she was so thankful to all the staff that day. She is never often far away from her Word Search book.

"Last year for her birthday she requested a rave party and she has asked for the same again this year. We asked for people to send her video messages on that occasion. Hilda has many friends amongst the residents and staff at Holbrook Hall and we can’t wait to share her birthday with her.

"We thought it would be lovely if she could receive cards from anyone who wants to wish her a happy birthday and make her day extra special."

When Hilda was born in 1920, the present King's great grandfather George V was on the throne, it cost the equivalent of about 5p to send a letter and it would be two years before the BBC was founded. She has lived through 22 different Prime Ministers and is older than the Disney corporation, founded in 1924.

After attending Ripley's primary and secondary schools, Hilda went to work at a Ripley factory making yarn for the manufacture of fabrics. During the Second World War years, she ironed uniforms and helped to make munitions in Derby. Later she worked at the local police station and also in a florist's shop.

Hilda met her husband, Walter, in her early twenties but he died in the late 1950s - he was her 'one true love' and she did not marry again after his passing. Following Walter's death and that of her sister Vera's husband, Hilda and her sister lived together for 63 years until Vera died. The pair would travel around the UK on dancing holidays, and also abroad on dancing cruises. Apparently, Hilda loves "listening to any music with a good tune".

An avid tennis fan, Hilda would regularly play in her younger days, participating in competitions and she still loves watching Wimbledon or other tennis tournaments on television. She did also play bowls occasionally with her husband. Hilda doesn't have any children but she has a close relationship with her nephew David.

Cards can be sent to Hilda Jackson c/o Holbrook Hall Residential Home, Makeney Road, Holbrook, Derbyshire. DE56 0TF.
