Residents at Milford House in Salisbury were delighted to welcome The Navy Larks who entertained everyone with a programme of sea shanties. The shanty is a traditional folk song that was once commonly used as a work song to accompany rhythmical labour aboard large merchant sailing vessels and so have a great beat and feel to them and often have amusing lyrics – ‘What shall we do with the drunken sailor?’ being a great example.
General Manager, Aga Musial commented 'Residents, family and friends assembled for an entertaining and lively hour as the Larks sang with great gusto and acted out many of the songs. There was lots of foot tapping, hand clapping and some residents even took centre stage with the Larks! There was a real buzz both in the room during their performance and afterwards, and the session will also be used as a basis for exploration of the history behind the songs and further reminiscence.'
The home plans to have more sessions where different musical cultures and traditions are explored as part of their journey celebrating 2025 as the National Activity Providers Association's 'Year of Musical Expression. These sessions will sit alongside those that are already in place such as music therapy, regular entertainers and music will also be featured in the home's art programme!
