Finding Harmony: Marian’s Connection to Music at Withens Nursing Home

Last Updated: 18 Mar 2025 @ 00:00 AM

At Withens Nursing Home, we understand the incredible power of music—especially for those living with dementia. Music has the ability to evoke memories, provide comfort, and create meaningful connections, even when words may be difficult to find. For Marian, music has always been a source of joy, but sometimes, the everyday sounds of a busy care home could make it hard for her to fully immerse herself in the melodies she loves.

That all changed thanks to a lightbulb moment from Lifestyle Lead, Nadia. One morning, Nadia arrived at work wearing her bright pink headphones. As she struggled to hear a colleague speaking to her, she suddenly had an idea—what if Marian had her own headphones, allowing her to listen to music without distractions?

Excited by the idea, the team introduced Marian to a pair of vibrant pink headphones and played some of her favourite New Orleans jazz. The result was instant and heart-warming—Marian became completely absorbed in the music, her face lighting up with recognition and joy. With no outside interruptions, she could truly connect with the rhythms and melodies that had been a part of her life for so long. A sense of peace and relaxation washed over her, creating a powerful moment of musical connection.

Now, thanks to her new pink headphones and the caring team at Withens, Marian enjoys her favourite music whenever she pleases, allowing her to experience the comfort, joy, and nostalgia that music brings.

At Withens Nursing Home, we are always looking for innovative and meaningful ways to enhance the well-being of our residents, and Marian’s story is a beautiful example of how a simple idea can make a world of difference.
