This month, we’re delighted to shine the spotlight on Soonita, our Clinical Lead at Kingfisher Nursing Home. With over 30 years of nursing experience and a heart full of compassion, Soonita is a cornerstone of the Kingfisher team and a true advocate for outstanding resident care. Soonita joined Kingfisher in July 2019 as a Senior Registered General Nurse (RGN) and quickly made her mark through her dedication, knowledge and leadership. Just last July, she proudly celebrated five years of service, having progressed to the vital role of Clinical Lead. Her responsibilities include overseeing medication management, supervising four Senior Healthcare Assistants and helping to lead Kingfisher through successful audits—including a recent 96% score in the ICB clinical audit, and an excellent rating in the Westgate Healthcare Effective Provider Visit which she is especially proud of. Originally from Mauritius, Soonita moved to the UK in 1989 after visiting her sister, who was already living here. What was meant to be a visit turned into a lifelong calling. She went on to complete the Project 2000 nursing diploma, a three-year program combining university-based study with hands-on placements in hospitals and care homes. It laid the foundation for a career that would span decades and touch countless lives. In 1995, Soonita’s nursing journey started in a care home in South West London. After many years of dedicated service, she felt it was time for a new challenge in a more close-knit setting. From the moment she interviewed at Kingfisher, she felt a strong connection: “I just knew I’d love it here,” she recalls—and she hasn’t looked back since. At Kingfisher, Soonita has been instrumental in raising care standards, especially in medication safety and process improvement. She also plays a broader role in the home’s culture and community—participating in the staff committee (which meets quarterly), helping organise BBQs, staff outings and events like Westgate in Bloom. The staff are already looking forward to the upcoming trip to the zoo in June. What drives her every day? The residents. “Many people come to us having lost their ability to care for themselves—we provide a warm, caring environment where they can regain comfort and dignity,” she explains. Soonita finds joy in connecting with residents and their families, hearing their life stories and making their day-to-day experiences as meaningful and comfortable as possible. Soonita is also passionate about holistic wellbeing. She trained in Therapeutic Massage at the London College of Beauty and was awarded first place across Westminster for her skills. She’s used this training to enrich the care of residents, always looking for ways to offer more comfort and compassion. Quality Director, Louise Atherton says “Soonita is a shining example of how experienced and skilled Registered Nurses working within our homes utilise their clinical skills, and have the opportunity to gain more valuable experience to support career development whilst still delivering Outstanding care, every day. It has been a pleasure to see how Soonita has grown into her role of clinical leadership and how this has contributed to the continued success of Kingfisher.” Now planning for her eventual retirement here in the UK, Soonita reflects on her career with gratitude and pride. “I love what I do. I’m passionate about care and I believe in working as a team. We all have the same aim—to support our residents with kindness and dignity.” Thank you, Soonita, for your tireless commitment, your warmth and the incredible difference you make every day.
