Long-Lost Friends Reunited After 80 Years Thanks to VE Day Celebration in Wisbech

Residents from Orchard House Care Home in Wisbech had a heart-warming and memorable day when they joined the local community in the park to mark VE Day—a day that unexpectedly brought two old school friends back together after more than 80 years apart.

As part of the commemorations, residents watched the cadet band marching and playing, which sparked fond memories for many.

Residents and staff were warmly welcomed by the park café, where they enjoyed a relaxing cup of tea and a slice of cake. Also joining the event were residents and team members from Lyncroft Care Home, setting the stage for a serendipitous reunion that no one could have predicted.

It was during this gathering that Doreen Jinson, aged nearly 97 and living at Lyncroft, spotted a familiar face—Kathleen “Joyce” King, aged nearly 95, from Orchard House. The two women, who hadn’t seen each other in over eight decades, recognised each other as former school friends from their childhood days in Friday Bridge.

“I couldn’t believe it,” said Joyce. “She hasn’t changed a bit. It’s amazing how much we have to talk about and catch up on.”

Doreen added, “It was wonderful to see Joyce. As you get older your friendship circle gets smaller, so it’s nice to have those friends back in your life again.”

Lifestyle Leads Miranda Robinson (Orchard House) and Sarah Perkins (Lyncroft) quickly exchanged contact details and arranged a special reunion for the two friends just days later on 27th May. The meeting was filled with laughter, stories, and memories of horse and cart journeys, family life in Waldersea Sidings, and growing up in Friday Bridge.

“It was wonderful to be part of organising the reunion of two lifelong friends,” said Miranda Robinson, Lifestyle Lead at Orchard House. “It was lovely listening and learning about their childhood together.”

Sarah Watson, Home Manager at Orchard House, added: “This unexpected and touching reunion is a beautiful reminder of the deep connections people carry throughout their lives. We’re proud to be part of a community that brings people together in such meaningful ways.”

As for Doreen and Joyce, the friendship has been rekindled and the ladies are already looking forward to their next catch-up.

Their story has not only brought joy to them but also sparked a new friendship between Orchard House and Lyncroft Care Home, who plan to work more closely in future to support community connections.

“This reunion was just the beginning,” said Miranda. “We’re so excited to see what comes next.”
