Residents at Yarningdale have taken part in first aid training, building their confidence and learning new skills to support their wellbeing.
The hands-on training session, a first for Exemplar Health Care, took place at Yarningdale care home in Codnor, Ripley and was led by Academy Manager, Jo Cheung.
The team created a supportive and inclusive space where people could build confidence and learn basic first aid skills such as CPR, the recovery position, and what to do in the event of a burn.
The session was requested by residents living in the home, and developed in collaboration with our internal Academy Team, to ensure it was tailored to their goals and interests.
At the beginning of the session, some residents shared their existing knowledge of first aid, along with stories of past roles as Carers or Healthcare Workers. Others expressed that they just wanted to know more about what to do in the event of an accident or emergency.
The training covered vital topics including how to treat burns, manage bleeding, respond to seizures, and perform CPR.
Each subject was broken down into simple, practical steps, ensuring it was accessible and engaging for everyone, regardless of their previous experience or ability.
The day included demonstrations, group discussions, and plenty of hands-on practice.
From applying bandages to performing chest compressions on a CPR mannequin, everyone had the chance to try each skill in a safe, supportive setting.
One resident, Graham, shared: “My uncle was a Paramedic. I learned a lot from him. I used to be a Carer too and we did first aid training. You remember a lot, but some things change so it’s good to refresh.”
Residents ended the session with more confidence, a stronger sense of independence, and a certificate from the Academy Team to celebrate their participation.
Jo Cheung, Academy Manager, shared:
“This session was designed to offer residents the opportunity to develop valuable first aid skills environment, to support their own and others’ wellbeing.
“Following the success at Yarningdale, we aim to offer this session across all Exemplar Health Care homes - giving everyone the opportunity to take part in a positive and inclusive learning experience.”
