Staff Spotlight – Cristian: From Childhood Dream to Regional Head Chef

At Westgate Healthcare, food does more than nourish. It comforts, connects, and creates memories. Our new Regional Head Chef, Cristian, brings that spirit into every kitchen he steps into.

A Passion Rooted in Childhood

Cristian grew up in Romania where his love of food began early. As a child he enjoyed baking pastries and dreamed of becoming a professional chef. Before pursuing that dream, he worked for four years in security systems, installing fire alarms and CCTV. Even then, his heart remained in the kitchen.

A Dream Move to the UK

In 2015, Cristian made a life-changing move to the UK. Within three days of arriving in London, he trialled as a Kitchen Porter at a local restaurant. The team quickly saw his potential and offered him the job on the spot. That first opportunity opened the door to the career he had always imagined.

Learning While Working

Cristian settled in Walthamstow and combined full-time work with studies at Waltham Forest College. He attended classes three days a week in Cooking, Maths, and English, achieving NVQ Level 2 and Level 3 in Professional Cooking. His dedication soon paid off. After completing Level 2, he became Chef de Partie at a pasta restaurant in Borough Market. Following Level 3, he moved to an Oxford Street restaurant as Sous Chef, perfecting the craft of handmade pasta.

Broadening His Horizons

Eager to grow further, Cristian joined a wedding venue where he prepared dishes for 60 to 120 guests across a range of cuisines. When the venue closed during the pandemic, he embraced a new opportunity. Through a recruitment agency, he began cooking in care homes. His motivation was simple: to create fresh, high-quality meals for residents and bring joy to their dining experience.

Cooking With Care

Since 2020, Cristian has dedicated his career to care home kitchens. For him, food is more than flavour, it’s about connection. He finds joy in chatting with residents, hearing their feedback, and sharing stories. The smiles he sees at mealtimes inspire him every day.

Leading With Passion at Westgate Healthcare

In 2025, Cristian joined Westgate Healthcare as Regional Head Chef, supporting nine homes across the group. He plays a key role in recruiting and guiding new chefs, making sure every kitchen delivers the highest standards. He fondly recalls his interview at Chestnut Manor Care Home, where conversations with residents and staff left a lasting impression.

His journey, from baking pastries in Romania to leading the culinary vision across Westgate’s nine homes, is a true story of passion and perseverance.
