Westgate Community Heroes Week: How Our Care Homes Gave Back

Last Updated: 17 Sep 2025 @ 00:00 AM

At Westgate Healthcare, we set aside time each year to recognise the people who support our local communities. Community Heroes Week is a chance for our residents and teams to learn more about local services, meet the people behind them, and find ways to show appreciation. Each of our homes chose their own way to take part.

Byron House Care Home in Aylesbury

At Byron House, residents spent time learning about the work of local services before deciding how they wanted to give thanks. Together, they wrote poems, made small gifts, and helped the kitchen team prepare cakes. These were delivered to Aylesbury Police Station as a gesture of appreciation for Thames Valley Police.

Meadowhill Care Home in Borehamwood and Elstree

Residents at Meadowhill enjoyed a game of Emergency Services bingo and a group discussion about the different roles in the community. Afterward, they worked on poems and handmade gifts. The kitchen team baked cakes and muffins, which residents delivered to Parkside Community Primary School and to the local Police, Fire, and Ambulance teams in Borehamwood.

Burford House Care Home in Rickmansworth

At Burford House, the week began with a focus on the local environment. Residents and staff went outside to tidy the village phone box and nearby footpaths. The activity encouraged everyone to work together while making a visible difference to the area.

Kingfisher Nursing Home in Cheshunt

Residents at Kingfisher welcomed four firefighters from Cheshunt Fire Station. They shared tea and cake before heading outdoors to take a closer look at the fire engine. The visit gave residents the opportunity to ask questions and hear first-hand about the team’s daily work.

St Pauls Care Home in Hemel Hempstead

This year at St Pauls, residents chose to recognise a wide range of local heroes, from the Hemel Hempstead Fire Service and St John Ambulance to the staff at the town library. Residents felt that library staff often go unrecognised, so they decided to make a special visit to Hemel Hempstead Library. There, they thanked the team in person for the vital role they play in the community. For many, the library is more than a place for books. It is a hub for learning, support, and a warm welcome to all. To round off the week, residents and staff dressed as superheroes and took part in a litter pick around the gardens and local area, showing that small actions can also make a big difference.

Looking Back on Community Heroes Week Across our homes, Community Heroes Week was a chance to connect with local services, say thank you in practical ways, and reflect on the people who make a difference every day. Whether through baking, crafting, tidying, or conversation, our residents enjoyed taking part and finding their own ways to give back.
