Resident’s Big Wish to 'See Elephants' Comes True at Colchester Zoo

In a touching celebration of dreams and togetherness. Carol, a much-loved resident at Riverdale Care Home, had her Big Wish granted with an unforgettable trip to Colchester Zoo.

A lifelong wish brought to life

Carol, winner of Westgate Healthcare’s Big Wish competition, had always hoped to get close to elephants - animals she has adored since childhood. Westgate Healthcare made that dream a reality, whereby her daughter accompanied her on a special day filled with joy, wonder, and lasting memories.

Beaming with happiness, Carol described the experience as “truly magical". She watched the elephants up close, marvelling at their size and gentle nature. For Carol, the day was more than just an outing – it was a cherished moment. This moment brought generations together, celebrating love, life, and adventure.

How the Make a Wish programme works

Since 2020, Westgate Healthcare’s Make a Wish initiative has been rolled out across all homes. Every resident can take part by writing their wish on a special ‘Wishing Tag’. Each home grants monthly wishes, bringing joy and meaning to residents’ lives. Bigger wishes are entered into the biannual ‘Big Wish’ draw. This ensures residents across the group have once-in-a-lifetime dreams fulfilled.
