Brentwood Care Centre recently opened its doors to the local community group Hug in a Shrug, led by Amy from Kinder Essex. The group, which meets regularly within the home, brings together people who share a passion for crafts such as knitting, crocheting and sewing — all while enjoying friendly conversation and refreshments in a relaxed setting.
The heart of Hug in a Shrug lies in its name: a comforting embrace through creativity. Designed to combat loneliness and social isolation, the group provides a welcoming environment where individuals can pursue their hobbies alongside others, forming friendships and sharing ideas as they go.
Amy, the group organiser, explained the inspiration behind the sessions, saying: “I started Hug in a Shrug to bring people together through something simple but meaningful — crafting. It’s not just about what we make; it’s about the friendships and laughter shared along the way.”
Although the group is currently community-based, the hope is that residents from Brentwood Care Centre will soon join in the sessions, adding their own creative flair to the mix. For now, the home is delighted to host such a positive and inclusive initiative that aligns with its focus on wellbeing, community spirit and meaningful engagement.
Rhiannon, Customer Relations Manager at Brentwood Care Centre, shared her enthusiasm for the partnership: “Hug in a Shrug has created a wonderful atmosphere in the home. You can feel the joy and calm when everyone is together, focused and chatting. I was thrilled when Amy reached out to hold the group here at Brentwood Care Centre.”
The sessions are already proving to be a hit, with laughter, creativity and connection at the heart of every meeting — a true testament to the power of coming together and finding warmth in shared moments.
Anyone can go along to the Hug in a Shrug sessions which are held every Wednesday 12:30-14:30 at Brentwood Care Centre, Larchwood Gardens Pilgrims Hatch, Brentwood CM15 9NG
