Wymondham, 9 November 2025 — Melton House Care Home in Wymondham held a poignant and moving Remembrance Day ceremony on Sunday, 9th November, honouring the bravery and sacrifice of those who served in the armed forces. The event was made especially memorable through the involvement of George Mills, a passionate young student from Wymondham High School, whose dedication to military history brought a deeply personal touch to the proceedings.
The ceremony began with the solemn recitation of The Exhortation:
“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.”
This was followed by the sounding of The Last Post, a reflective Two Minute Silence, and the uplifting notes of Reveille. The optional Kohima Epitaph was also shared:
“When you go home, tell them of us and say,
For your tomorrow, we gave our today.”
George, dressed proudly in his army uniform and wearing the cherished medals of his great-grandparents—kindly entrusted to him by his grandmother and grandfather—then read the iconic poem In Flanders Fields. His heartfelt delivery and deep respect for the occasion resonated powerfully with residents and staff alike.
George’s passion for military history is well known in the local community. At just 11 years old, he has amassed an impressive collection of original wartime memorabilia, particularly from the Second World War. His bedroom, described by many as a mini museum, reflects his vast knowledge and admiration for those who served. George aspires to join the cadets next summer and dreams of a future in the armed forces.
The home was beautifully decorated for the occasion, creating a respectful and reflective atmosphere. Residents expressed their appreciation for the ceremony and were especially touched by George’s presence and dedication.
Maria Falkus, Home Manager at Melton House, shared:
"It was a privilege to welcome George and witness the connection he built with our residents. His passion, pride, and respect for our veterans brought the spirit of Remembrance Day to life in a truly meaningful way."
