Residents and colleagues at Anchor’s Kingfisher Court care home in Sutton-in-Ashfield came together for a memorable series of Remembrance Day commemorations, honouring those who have served and remembering the sacrifices made.
In the days leading up to Remembrance Sunday, the home became a hive of creative activity as residents crafted poppies, wreaths and collages. One resident knitted individual poppies for fellow residents to wear with pride on the day itself.
On Remembrance Sunday, Kingfisher Court held its own commemoration service. Veterans from across the community attended, sitting alongside residents to exchange wartime experiences and stories.
On Remembrance Day itself, residents gathered to watch the official Remembrance Day commemorations broadcast live from London, observing the traditional two-minute silence before sharing cake and coffee together. Throughout the day, a live singer performed beloved wartime classics, and a series of period films were broadcast. Colleagues also prepared a specially curated menu featuring 1940s-style food and drinks.
The home opened its doors to family and friends, with storytelling sessions giving residents and visiting veterans the opportunity to share memories and preserve their important personal histories for future generations.
Gaynor Smart-McCann, Home Manager at Kingfisher Court, said: "Remembrance Day means so much to our residents. Many of them have direct connections, either through their own service or through loved ones who served. We wanted to create something that honoured that history but also gave people the space to share their memories with each other.”
