We continue our Meet the Team series, shining a spotlight on the amazing people who make our homes so special. This time, we are introducing Sam, the Home Manager at Plymbridge House.

Your Journey & Leadership

Path to Management: How did you get started in care, and what led you to become a Home Manager?

I started in care 14 years ago, encouraged by my mum who was a senior carer at a nursing home. I really enjoyed the role, then progressed to senior carer. Wanting to broaden my experience, I moved to Derriford Hospital and worked across various departments, later joining the district nursing service in the community. I then decided as my sons were grown it was the right time to train to be nurse.

While studying nursing at Plymouth University when the pandemic hit, I returned to work in a residential home, helping in any way I could. That experience left a lasting impact.

After qualifying, I returned to the district nurses, but my heart was not content. I moved to a nursing home, progressing to Clinical Lead, then Deputy Manager, and this year, I took the step up to Home Manager. It feels like I’ve come full circle, back to the environment that first inspired me.

Proudest Achievement: What is one achievement in your role that you’re most proud of?

Qualifying as a nurse during the pandemic is the achievement I’m most proud of. There was no playbook, placements were cancelled, the curriculum was constantly changing, and everything felt uncertain. It was a huge challenge, but it built my resilience, adaptability, and confidence. That experience has shaped how I lead today, with empathy, compassion, flexibility, and a strong sense of purpose.

Life in the Home

Culture & Atmosphere: How would you describe the atmosphere in your home?

It's wonderful! When I first came to the home I picked up straight away on how much love and care was present. It has an abundance of character, and it’s so evident how attentive the staff are. It has a real family feel, and that is reflected in the incredible reviews the home receives. You feel welcome before you arrive at the door.

Team Leadership: How do you support and motivate your team to provide the best care possible?

I support and motivate my team by being approachable, sharing knowledge, and leading by example. I’ve worked in many of the roles within the home myself, so I understand the responsibilities, challenges, and pressures each department faces. That experience helps me support the team with empathy and respect.

I truly believe every role is vital in making a house a home, from care staff to housekeeping, kitchen, and maintenance. I empower my team through ongoing development, encourage progression, and advocate for training that helps each person grow with confidence.

Resident Experience: Can you share a story that captures what makes life in your home special?

Although I’ve only recently joined the home, what’s stood out to me straight away is the genuine person-centred care and the effort the team puts into making each day meaningful for residents. From personalised activities to small, thoughtful gestures, it’s clear the staff know the residents well, not just their needs, but their personalities, preferences, and life stories.

It’s been lovely to see residents laughing and engaging in activities that reflect their interests, whether that’s music, reminiscing in the garden, or simply having a cup of tea and a chat. It’s a special environment where people are truly seen and valued.

Quality & Standards

Best Practice: How do you ensure the home meets (and exceeds) care standards every day?

Ensuring high standards starts with clear communication, and a culture of openness and transparency. I make sure the team understands not just what the standards are, but why they matter, and how they directly impact the lives of our residents. By leading with consistency and encouraging a “we’re always improving” mindset, we aim not just to meet expectations, but to exceed them.

Innovation in Care: Have you introduced any changes or initiatives that have made a big difference to residents or staff?

As I’ve only recently stepped into the role, I’m currently spending time getting to know the home, the team, and the residents, really understanding what’s working well and where there’s room for growth.

I’m passionate about involving the team in ideas for improvements; their ideas and insight are essential, and I want to build on the great work that’s already happening.

Community & Families

Family Connection: How do you build strong relationships with residents’ families?

I believe building strong relationships with families starts with trust, openness, and regular communication. I make an effort to be visible, approachable, and available, whether it’s for a quick chat, a question, or simply being there to listen.

After all, they trust us with their most treasured person, which must be incredibly hard and, at times, scary. That’s why it’s so important that we offer reassurance, not just through words, but through our consistent actions. When families see their loved one safe, well cared for, and truly known, it builds the confidence and connection that makes all the difference.

Community Links: How does your home stay connected with the local community?

We stay connected with the local community by welcoming visitors, partnering with local schools, churches, and volunteer groups who bring activities and companionship to our residents. We also participate in community events as well as trips out, which helps keep our residents engaged and connected beyond our doors.

These connections are vital; they enrich residents’ lives, create a sense of belonging, and remind everyone that our home is part of a wider, caring community.

Looking Ahead

Vision: What’s your vision for your home next year, and what would you say to someone thinking about joining your team?

My vision for the home over the next year is to continue building a warm, supportive environment where every resident feels truly valued and at home, whilst recognising the growing and diverse needs of our ageing population and those within our local demographic.

As an advocate for people living with dementia, I’m passionate about helping them live well, with meaning, purpose, and the chance to enjoy what they love every day. It’s vital that we adapt and innovate to support all residents with compassion and creativity.

To anyone thinking about joining our team, I’d say this: if you’re passionate about making a real difference, enjoy working with heart, and want to grow in a supportive, collaborative environment, you’ll find a rewarding and welcoming place here.
