A well run care home with great friendly staff. My sister has greatly improved in her overall health, getting involved wtih activities and communicating with residents and staff. Well done.
Reply from Emma Ellis, Manager of Oban House at Oban HouseThank You for your kind words, the Management alongside the Proprietors of Oban House feel it is very important to work closely together to ensure the running of the home is very smooth and also to ensure that the residents have everything that they require to enable them to have not only a good quality of life but also a good quality in the service that we are providing for them.
The staff as always, work very closely as a team to ensure that the same quality is delivered in all of the residents day to day living activities and that their preferences, choices and independence is always first and foremost.

Mum moved into Oban House at the beginning of the year, after unfortunately falling at home. The accident left mum unable to walk without assistance, so 24 hour care was required. Since she has become a resident i believe she has grown quite found of the care stuff and fellow residents resulting in
her settling in very well.
The stuff are friendly, polite and helpful, but always very busy. Although always managing to answer any concerns or providing info. Her room is kept clean and common areas tidy. Mum always seems clean and clothes freshly washed.
Everyday she is given a choice of food, which she says is very appetising. Over the period of time she has stayed I can't fault Oben House.
Reply from Emma Ellis, Manager of Oban House at Oban HouseThank you for such a complimentary review, it is nice to see that the comments that you have made are about all areas of the home that cover all the different team roles from Care staff, Housekeeping staff and also the Kitchen staff.
At Oban House we very much work as a team to ensure that all aspects of the home deliver quality and satisfaction to everyone, whilst also making sure that all residents independence and personal choice is always upheld to the full.

My 95 year old mum with dementia has been living in Oban House now for about 6 months. I personally checked a few homes out beforehand and this one not only had a good CQC rating but struck me as a very happy home. Not only the residents appear happy and friendly but the staff do too. The whole place
just has a lovely atmosphere about it where they just go the extra mile for everyone.
My mum is a very independent person and hard to please but she seems to have settled in very nicely here and made new friends. I did caring myself for over 10 years - and stange as this may seem - this home really does care for them, which is not always the case in some places I've seen. Quite frankly, I can't speak highly enough of them - they're all just nice kind people.
Reply from Emma Ellis, Manager of Oban House at Oban HouseThank you so much for your lovely review, it is very rewarding to hear that all the standards and beliefs that we have regarding person centred care are recognised by friends and family that visit the home and their loved ones.
It makes us all at Oban House feel very proud when we read reviews like this because it just confirms to us that we are getting things right and are delivering a good quality of care and life to all that reside here.

Our father has been in Oban House since mid 2024 and it is the happiest we have seen him for many years. Living alone, with worsening dementia, he was lonely and struggling to look after himself. In Oban House, his physical and emotional wellbeing have all really improved. He really enjoys himself.
He has his own routines, which the staff support and has made some good friends. His health and dementia are carefully managed. We feel very lucky to have found him somewhere where the atmosphere is more of a family home for its residents, rather than a large "chain" location which prioritises profits over care. It really makes a very positive difference.
Reply from Emma Ellis, Manager of Oban House at Oban HouseThank you so much for your kind words and praise. All reviews that are placed for Oban House are always relayed back to the staff as it is all their hard work and commitment that make Oban house the lovely home from home that it is.
I feel very blessed to be managing the team of staff that we have, but of course the pleasure of looking after the amazing group of residents that we have makes every single day worth coming to work for.
We also pride ourselves on the relationships that we have built with all the relatives and friends that come to visit their loved ones at Oban House and we thank everyone for their continued support.

Didn't know what to expect. What i found was members of staff very helpful with nothing to much trouble. Room clean and kept tidy, food very good with stepfather eating everything that's put in front of him resulting in him putting on weight and looking better than when he was first went in. Can turn
up to see him whenever i want as door is open 24/7.
Reply from Emma Ellis, Manager of Oban House at Oban HouseThank you for a lovely positive review, Oban House prides itself in not only looking to support the residents that come to reside with us here, but to also support the families and loved ones to enable them to spend as much quality time as possible with their relatives and friends.
We are very aware that this is the residents home not just our place of work, so are always ensuring that the routine and the culture of Oban House runs to suit the residents and families needs and expectations.

Very helpful and friendly staff,Feels very homely.Sister in law very happy with everything said she can talk to staff and they care .Always make you feel welcomed while visiting and nothing is to much trouble when you ask for anything.
Reply from Emma Ellis, Manager of Oban House at Oban HouseOban House endeavours to ensure that we are a home from home for anyone that comes to reside here, as we understand that people have had their independence in their own homes and do not want anyone to feel that they have lost that.
Residents are encouraged daily to do as much as they can for themselves and support from staff is always to hand 24/7 should it be needed.
We encourage families and friends to visit wherever possible as they would have done when their loved ones would have been living independently in their own homes so that the transition into Oban house has a minimal effect to their lives.

My mother receives very good care from all the staff at Oban House. She has settled in very well and is very contented and happy.
The Staff are very friendly, supportive and encouraging and my mother who has dementia is relaxed and happy which is a great load off my mind. When I have speak to any
of the staff members, they are helpful and accommodating and nothing is too much trouble. She has a nice room with plenty to see from her window, which is lovely as she likes to look at what is going on outside the home. She looks forward to meal times and the choice is of home cooked food is varied and tasty. No complaints there! Her appetite has improved since she has been resident and we are very pleased with our choice of Oban House.

A home-from-home: One of the main differences between this care home and many others is that it is, privately owned and managed by a manager who is very friendly and competent. She takes her job very seriously and is focused on the safety and happiness of the residents as her no 1 priority. The Care
Team follows her example, and as a result, the atmosphere and environment are very relaxed. With no bare floors and old uncomfortable chairs, it has all recently been fully carpeted, which makes the rooms feel warm and welcoming. No nasty smells or sticky surfaces which are not only unpleasant but could be part of an infection spread. Very importantly the Care Team mix with the residents all the time, not leaving them alone to fend for themselves, which is again so important for folks who are not as agile as once were, both physically and mentally. My husband was a resident there for a short period as an emergency to cover my unplanned hospital admittance and he was cared for very well.
Reply from Emma Ellis, Manager of Oban House at Oban HouseThe Management and team at Oban House would like to thank you very much for this review, It was an absolute pleasure to have your loved one in our care even though it was for a short time. It is lovely to have a review that covers every aspect of Oban House and also compliments every member of the team whatever their role may be. Although we are always sad to see a resident leave our care, we also see it as a blessing that your loved one was able to return home to you. We all wish you the very best and hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a great New Year.

This resident was placed into this home by his great friends, ourselves, eight weeks back. Second week he told management he wanted to leave, witnessed. Now removed him from the room we booked. Self-funded £1000 per week. Police, MP, social services and CQC now all involved. Held now against his own
wishes. Another care home was refused access to assess his needs to transfer to a place of safety. Photographs/recordings held.
Reply from Emma Ellis, Manager of Oban House at Oban HouseAs the Manager of Oban House, I am replying to this review as I feel that it should be made quite clear, that police, MPs, social services and CQC have been working alongside Oban House to protect a resident that came into our care, and is still in our care with the confidence and knowledge of CQC, social services, police and MPs that this resident is well cared for, happy and is in the correct place to meet all needs required. I would also like to add that under no circumstances would CQC and social services allow for a resident to be held anywhere against their will. The care that is given at Oban House is second to none, and the reviews that we have had to date only ever reflect the dignity, respect, love and care that is offered to anyone that wishes to reside here in our home.

Mum and Dad have been very well looked after. The carers are very experienced in dealing with their Alzheimer's disease in addition to their day-to-day personal care. We chose Oban House because Mum and Dad could share a room, the staff went out of their way to explain how they could accommodate all
their needs, and how the home looked and felt - my perception was very good from the outset. I have not been disappointed with the care they have received. All of the staff (the manager, the carers, the catering, housekeeping and maintenance team) are always approachable and friendly, as well as very professional. Residents are treated gently, considerately and with respect, but there is also humour and genuine goodwill. They celebrate special occasions and seasonal holidays, including gatherings open to families and friends. I am especially grateful for the careful watch that is kept over my parents' health and ensuring their medical needs are met in conjunction with the local GP team.

My mother initially was admitted into the home in July 2022 when she became too much for my dad to look after. She has major mobility issues and dementia, all the staff at the home have been extremely attentive to her needs and ensured medical assistance is promptly obtained when required which has
been quite often. My dad didn't cope well himself after mum went in the home and the staff ended up almost caring for him as an outpatient, notifying me when he wasn't well inviting him in for meals etc. Dad eventually put himself into the home in February 2024 and his health and mental attitude has improved no end. The home is run like a small family, the staff are extremely friendly and helpful and seem to be able to adapt their care to the varying needs of the residents. Both mum and dad are extremely happy with the care they receive.

Since my sister was welcomed into Oban House in April 2024 she has been helped with patience and understanding by all the staff to settle into her new surroundings. Her personal choices on food, social interaction with others and fear of change has been respected and with gentle support and encouragement
is now enjoying a much improved quality of life. I have found all the staff extremely helpful in keeping me fully informed of my sister's progress from day one. They are always ready to answer and discuss any questions or queries I have as well as advising me how from a distance I can assist my sister settle into her 'new home' including facilitating my phone calls to her. In a short period of time my sister has regained her sense of self and enjoying life.

My mum has been a resident at Oban House for 15 months. She has been treated with nothing but respect. The care she has been given has been exemplary, with carers listening to her needs/requests and meeting them as long as they complied with regulations. Her rooms and facilities are clean and kept in
good order. There is a choice of food that is good. It is presented well and taken to her room. I have nothing but praise and thanks for the manager and her team.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.584)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.584) out of 10 for Oban House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 20 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 5.0 out of 5 from 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.609 for Oban House is calculated as follows: ( (171 Excellents x 5) + (48 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) + (7 Poors x 2) + (4 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 233 Ratings = 4.609
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.975 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Oban House is based on 19 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 + 0.025 = 3.975
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 30 registered maximum number of service users is 6, which has been reached with 19 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
