Scarborough House is a small, low-dependency residential care home in Wells-next-the-Sea, North Norfolk - a Victorian building on a real street, just a quarter of a mile from the sea, where a small group of up to seventeen residents enjoy a warm, family-style environment.

People of the home still go to the hairdresser, take their scooter to the high street, attend their local church or Day Centre, and sit outside chatting to neighbours. Residents who are able may go for walks with complete autonomy. Life here does not stop - it simply continues at a gentler pace.

Rooms feel like home because your loved ones can bring their own furniture, photographs, and belongings. The building has a large conservatory, two lounges, and a dining room that once served as a restaurant and still feels like one.

Not Clients. Not Patients. Not Service Users. Individual People. There is no distress in the air. It feels like a house full of people who happen to be older, being looked after by people who genuinely like them.

The staff team is stable and experienced - most senior staff have been in post between ten and twenty-five years. The staff who looked after your loved one last week are the same staff who will look after them the following week. No agency staff are used. NVQ qualifications across the team range from Level 2 to Level 7.

The home operates to a consistently high standard every day, for every person, delivering person-centred approaches as a natural and ongoing part of its everyday practice.

A health professional from the local GP surgery visits twice a week; people are seen promptly, and treatment is not delayed over a weekend.

Visitors are welcome without an appointment at any time.

Excellent home from home. We can visit anytime the door is always unlocked and the staff are always welcoming.
The care my mother has received has been excellent not rushed or careless nothing seems too much trouble. Everything is done the way my mother likes it done and when.
The staff are all
familiar and know the residents well.
The activities look fun and mum likes to join in where she didn't in the other home.
The food is provided is what she likes if she doesn't like what's on the menu the cook will prepare her something else. Proper person centred care.
Mum likes to visit the town to do shopping or to visit a coffee shop.
I really couldn't ask for any better.

Overall Experience 4.0 out of 5
I visited a friend - one of the Residents of Scarborough House Home N.Norfolk . My immediate thoughts on my first visit there was that it was good, good welcoming from the staff, clean and a good relaxed feeling was evident .when I was looking for a care Home for my own Mother it was difficult to know
what would be right for her. There were the Homes, brand new, purpose built all mod cons- but old folks like familiarity - chairs like their chairs carpets curtains the look of their surrounding not too dissimilar to their own homes that they had to leave behind, that's Scarborough's look. When I visited my friend I would also pop into see other residents whose doors were open and in the sitting room it always seemed a relaxed atmosphere, and the Residents happy to have a chat. Scarborough House is a good Home.

My mother-in-law has been here for several years now. They are a good price, swapped out their furniture for hers, she has a good sized room and they are local. Good Wi-Fi, so she can stay in contact with family abroad, they help her if needed. During Covid they sent photos of her and did video chats
with everyone (from their tablet) to keep all in touch and not be isolated.
They do outings, local clubs, social gatherings and celebrations, birthday teas are always special (tasty too). It's like a big happy family, supportive, kind, patient and have a laugh too. Would choose again and definitely recommend.
Reply from Kamil Pyra, Manager at Scarborough HouseThank you so much for taking the time to share this - it means a great deal to us. The pandemic years were difficult for everyone, and keeping families connected when visits weren't possible was something we felt strongly about. Knowing that those small gestures made a difference is wonderful to hear. We are delighted your Mother-in-law feels at home here - and that the birthday teas are passing the taste test. We will pass your kind words on to the whole team. With warm wishes

My mother has been at Scarborough House nearly 8 years now and I would definitely recommend staying here for a loved one. They are caring, patient, friendly and thoughtful being both compassionate and very competent.
I looked at several Care Homes before picking Scarborough House, others had small
room and were impersonal. Here is a beautiful building and feels like a home with the staff and residents as one big family.
I first viewed, with no notice, was most welcome, nothing to 'hide', very open. The owner and staff have become friends and are very supportive of me too when things have been tough with my mum.
My mum has a beautiful medium room, very generous with an on suite toilet. Bathroom close by with aids if required.
Staff engage residents with a range of activities, games/quiz's, parties for Halloween, Christmas and birthday high tea very yummy (Dietary adaptations as required).
Over the years they have been outstanding. Mum and I have been most happy with our choice.
Reply from Kamil Pyra, Manager at Scarborough HouseThank you so much for sharing your experience with us - and what a wonderful thing to read. Eight years is a long time, and the fact that you and your Mum have felt at home here throughout means more to us than any inspection result ever could. We remember that first unannounced visit well - and we are so glad you felt welcome. Your kind words will mean a great deal to the whole Team. We are proud to have your Mum with us, and we look forward to many more birthday high teas together. With warm wishes.

Current Review Score: 9.2 (9.179)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.2 (9.179) out of 10 for Scarborough House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 4 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.4 out of 5 from 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.804 for Scarborough House is calculated as follows: ( (37 Excellents x 5) + (9 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 46 Ratings = 4.804
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.375 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Scarborough House is based on 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.375
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 17 registered maximum number of service users is 3.4, which has been reached with 4 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Kamil Pyra

Job Title: Registered Manager Joined: 2015

Kamil has worked at Scarborough House for eleven years — starting as a carer, moving to a senior carer, and for the past six years serving as Registered Manager. The home is not something Kamil manages from a distance. It is something he has grown up in professionally, from the floor upwards.

Because his career began in hands-on care, Kamil has a clear understanding of what good care actually looks like in practice — not on paper. What it takes to support someone with dignity at six in the morning, and what families need to hear when they are worried. That background shapes everything about how Scarborough House is run.

His approach is straightforward. Residents should feel like people, not service users. Families should feel genuinely welcome, not managed. And staff should feel supported and valued — because the quality of care in any home is only ever as good as the people delivering it.

Scarborough House has consistently achieved very high ratings across all formal inspections. Kamil is proud of that — but prouder still that those results reflect how the home works every day, not just on inspection day.

Job Title: Care Manager Joined: 2018

Charlie has built her career in care over nearly two decades — beginning as a Care Assistant in a mental health unit, moving into community-based domiciliary care, and for the past eight years growing within Scarborough House from Care Assistant through to Senior Carer and now Care Manager. Her progression has been steady and earned, shaped by hands-on experience at every stage.

Her early years in mental health gave her a strong understanding of complex needs and the importance of patience, consistency, and empathy. This was followed by over a decade in community care, supporting people in their own homes with day-to-day living — from personal care and meals to medication and emotional support. That experience of working independently, building trust quickly, and adapting to each individual still informs how she works today.

Charlie's approach to care is simple and consistent — people should be seen as individuals, not service users. Families should feel informed and reassured, not left wondering. She places a strong emphasis on transparency and communication, ensuring relatives feel involved. Charlie's great passion is medication management.

As Care Manager, she works closely alongside the Registered Manager, playing a central role in maintaining standards and continually striving for the best possible inspection outcomes. She takes particular pride in the consistency of care within the home and the teamwork that underpins it — believing that strong staff support ultimately leads to better outcomes for residents.
