Coniston House is a lovely 27 bedded residential home specialising in providing care for the elderly and those with dementia. Staff are kind and thoughtful and receive regular training to ensure that they provide residents with the high standards of care that they deserve.

There is a daily programme of activities and entertainment and a beautiful garden to enjoy. They hold regular events throughout the year for residents and their families to take pleasure in and visitors are always welcome. The rooms are beautifully decorated; most have en-suite bathrooms and there are also two shower rooms and two assisted baths. The home works closely with the local GP’s and District Nurses and have regular visits from a chiropodist, hairdresser and local church groups.

The head chef caters for all special diets and produces delicious home cooked meals to a very high standard, ensuring that menus are always nutritious and developed with the care of residents in mind.

They are also able to offer respite care from two to four weeks to give carers a well deserved rest and can offer End of Life Care, ensuring that residents stay in familiar surroundings being cared for by people they know and trust when they reach the end of their life.

They are regulated and inspected by the Care Quality Commission and the most recent inspection found them fully compliant in all areas (rated 'good' February 2022). The report is available to read online via the Care Quality Commission’s website or a hard copy can be provided by contacting the home.

I visit my sister once/twice weekly. She seems to have settled in quite well. As she has dementia she finds it difficult to communicate this is because she find it quite noisy sometimes with what is going on. If possible it would be nice to have a quiet room at the home.
Reply from Rebecca Porter, Director at Coniston HouseThank you for your review and your comments. The conservatory tends to be a little quieter and you are welcome to use the dining room if you would like more privacy during your visits as this is only used at mealtimes. . The staff will be happy to assist with this.

Janet came to Coniston House in March 2025 from another home.
The change in her is incredible. I visit very regularly and have seen a positive, Happy Janet. Her care is so profound, the staff always have time for her and myself. Janet is always clean and tidy. The comparison between the two homes
is remarkable. I know Janey is loved and cared for, and I am extremely happy knowing that my sister wants nothing at Coniston House. Well done, staff.
Reply from Rebecca Porter, Director at Coniston HouseThank you so much for your kind words. I shall pass on your comments to our team.

A very well run and caring care home. Clean, nice decor. Not too big, giving it a more family priented feel. Food is excellent. Garden is well appointed and enjoyable for residents, families and staff when outside supervising. The move of the dining area to the bottom lounge is excellent, a less crowded
feel and more of a feel of a proper dining area for residents.
Coniston is, overall, a lovely care home.

My dad was in a purpose built nursing/residential home in Hertfordshire and it felt very impersonal and cold. He moved to Coniston House and was greeted warmly, treated with respect and dignity at all times. His room was light and clean and he had his own toilet and sink. He was near the kitchen and
the front door and could hear the doorbell going and people chatting in the kitchen and he settled in there like he was at home. The staff were amazing and kept you up to date.

Mum was a resident at Coniston for four years.
After visiting several homes we found Coniston House, and what a find!
Mum was welcomed not as a resident but with friendship, love and care and above all respect.
Coniston House is not just a "care home". It was Mum's home.
They even especially prepared
food for her to tempt her to eat.
They also gave us one hundred percent support as a family and their advice was invaluable.
We cannot praise the staff and management enough.
Mum was treated with the utmost dignity after she passed even to the point of the staff gathering together to say their goodbyes.
We would recommend this home to anyone with no reservations whatsoever based on our experience and would trust them with my loved ones unconditionally.
We owe them a debt for and on behalf of mum that we can never repay.
They were all "simply the best".
Thank you.

My mother was a resident at Coniston House from 2007-2016 when she passed away. I saw a great improvement in the home during this time. The home had a 'family' feel and the carers were kind, helpful and knew each resident well as an individual. There was more consistency of staffing during the later
years of mum's stay. There was a big improvement of the home - the outside area was developed to allow residents to go outside. Mum was well looked after at Coniston House and I always felt welcome when I visited. They employ an activities coordinator and hold family events during the year. The staff are trained to deal with patients with dementia and the residents were treated with respect.

My experience of care at Coniston House was all positive. All carers, without exception, were kind and considerate to mum. Her room was kept spotlessly clean and pleasant smelling by the cleaners.
The lounges and dining areas were always very welcoming with fresh flowers and comfortable areas to sit.
Mum
was quite happy with the quality and quantity of food and drinks provided. From being very reluctant to go into residential care, she settled happily after a few weeks, enjoying the fact her 'independent spirit' was respected wherever possible.

The care which mum received at Coniston House was exceptional. The staff were patient, attentive and caring. They treated my mum like she was their mum and nothing was ever too much trouble for her or for us as her family.

My mother was a resident at Coniston House for several years. The term 'care home' is particularly relevant because they really did care about her. She really mattered to them. The way that they dealt with her and us, in her last few weeks, also showed the same.

My wife and I made our 1st visit to Coniston House today and were very impressed. In all, we had conversations with four members of staff and they all were genuinely friendly and it was obvious that they cared for the residents.
Our friend Ron has been in the home for about 6 months and was full of
praise for the way he is looked after.
I had the job of finding a home for my mother a few years back and soon found out that a lot of the homes were bad, to put it mildly
I think it was the feeling of when you first entered that the residents seemed relaxed and at home. I just hope that if I or my wife need a care home in the future we find one like Coniston House

The care home which my father is in is outstanding. The care and love they show him is exceptional. They have experienced some deaths recently which they must be attached to and still, that does not stop them caring. Marked down in facilities because it would be nice for the staff to have proper rest
area not a table in the resident's area. Given as much love as it was at home.

Current Review Score: 8.5 (8.500)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.5 (8.500) out of 10 for Coniston House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 3 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.8 out of 5 from 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.694 for Coniston House is calculated as follows: ( (26 Excellents x 5) + (9 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 36 Ratings = 4.694
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 3.806 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Coniston House is based on 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.25
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 27 registered maximum number of service users is 5.4. 3 Positive Reviews ÷ 5.4 = 0.556
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
