Highlands is an independent, not for profit care home in the delightful market town of Woodbridge. The traditional country house, which has been sensitively converted to meet modern care standards, has extensive gardens and stunning views down to the River Deben. The 24 single bedrooms are all comfortably furnished and have washbasins and toilets, some also have their own ensuite showers.

Highlands was set up in 1983 by 4 local families, with the founding principle to care for each resident as if they were their own.

This home from home principle encompasses everything they do. They have a dedicated and long-serving team of staff, the majority of whom have been with them for many years.

Staff encourage and support their residents' independence while providing help and support 24 hours a day if needed.

The large dining room offers delicious home-cooked meals and homemade cakes at teatime.

You can spend your day as you wish: relaxing and socialising in the sitting rooms or conservatory; joining in with one of the many activities on offer, or simply taking in the views over the town to the River Deben from one of the seating areas around the garden.

My mother truly feels at home due to the care and attention given by the staff at Highlands. Her room is lovely with lots of natural light and a good amount of space. The food is exceptional, although the dining area could do with some extra lighting. The staff are friendly and genuine in their desire
to make my mother's stay as comfortable as possible.

My mother became a resident of Highland House, a residential care home in November 2024 as she was not safe to be left living in her own house , due to minor T.I.A's and falling. We found the care home due to recommendations from a friend who had a relation living there in the recent past. We went to
view the home with my mother (who was very fastidious ) We were pleased to find that she could take her own furniture ,pictures etc and make the room her own personal space.
The staff at the home were caring, patient and friendly and did everything possible to make her stay a positive experience .Mum enjoyed the daily activities provided and the social meetings in the communal areas. She enjoyed the meals which were provided to an exceptionally high standard. Unfortunately, due to a fall she became less mobile during her last few months at the home. The care she received during this time was excellent.
I have nothing but praise for the care given to my mother (age 96).

I would like to commend the staff at Highlands for their utmost care in looking after my husband up to and including his final weeks. They were so supportive and went the extra mile willingly. Everything was done to make him comfortable. This was done not only for my husband but for us as a family
as well.

I would consider Highlands Care Home to be exemplary in every way and it goes without saying that I appreciate so much the care and kindness given. I would like to thank all the staff for their dedicated time and support.

My mother-in-law has settled in well at Highlands thanks to the friendly and helpful staff and homely surroundings. We have joined her once for Sunday lunch at the home and the food was really tasty and all home-cooked. There are lovely grounds to walk in and the best view of the River Deben. We are
very happy that the residents are all very well looked after, safe and respected.
Reply from Kirsten Brooks, Home manager at Highlands Care HomeThank you for taking the time to leave a review, Highlands has a home from home atmosphere, with caring, supportive staff and our wonderful home cooked food, hearing that our residents and their families are happy with the care and support they receive is wonderful to hear.

My mother has been residing in Highlands for the last 7 months and we could not be happier. The staff provide an excellent and tailor made standard of care which is given with dignity and respect.
There is a lovely homely environment and the home cooked food is of a very high standard. Meals are provided
in the dining room which residents are encouraged to come to, providing a regular social time. There are activities throughout the week.
When my mother has been unwell she was well looked after with the GP or paramedics being called out promptly, if needed. There are also weekly visits from her GP surgery when she can be seen, if needed.
The gardens are great for a potter and to sit in when it's warmer, with a lovely unexpected view of the river.
All the above has had a major impact on my mothers mental and physical wellbeing. She was very reluctant to leave her own home and within a week, said she was very glad she did.

Highlands is a generally very good facility, however when my mother moved in 5 years ago it was sold to us as a residential home, now it is very much a care home which means a lot of the staff's time is taken up with more time consuming duties leaving little "time/quality/compassionate time" for residents
who need less physical care.

The home is very friendly and welcoming. It is very clean, the seating areas are lovely and bright with books and a lovely fish tank to help relaxation. The staff are so lovely and kind and the food appears excellent judging by the menus and smells from the kitchen. The gardens are magnificent with
river views and lots of seating areas. There is also a lovely pond at the front of the home.
Reply from Johanna Edmeades, Manager at Highlands Care HomeThank you so much for your kind words! We're thrilled to hear that you found Highlands to be welcoming and comfortable. We take great pride in maintaining a clean and inviting space, and it's wonderful that the seating areas, fish tank, and gardens stood out to you. Our team works hard to provide excellent service, and we're glad to know you enjoyed the atmosphere. The river views and pond are truly special, and we're happy you could experience that beauty. Your feedback means a lot to us, and we look forward to welcoming you

My sister and myself knew as soon as we walked into this home it was the right one for our 101 year old mother (after seeing many before). Mum has settled in and is comfortable with all staff, as we found them to be caring, understanding, kind and professional in all their duties. If any matter needs
attention it is dealt with quickly and efficiently.

My father has been at Highlands Care Home for a number of years. He is comfortable and cared for but still able to maintain some of his own independence which is very important to him. High standards of care, cleanliness and support are clearly maintained. The food choice is excellent and flexible to
individual preferences (within reason). I have been very happy with the people who care at Highlands - there is stability which leads to a better knowledge of individual residents likes/dislikes - I have got to know several of the carers reasonably well and without exception they are lovely.

My father spent the final three years of his life at Highlands. He was well cared for, especially during the difficult pandemic times. The home is both warm and welcoming, and the care staff are of the highest order. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend it to others.

My mother had three falls in 24-hours and ended up in hospital. We realised she could no longer live alone. She was registered with Highlands and they responded quickly saying she could come straight from the hospital. She did actually go home for three days, with help, so we could pack. On arrival
at Highlands, the staff were so kind, gentle and efficient. I, obviously, could not go in but their respite room was on the ground floor so we could talk through the window. Later she moved to a lovely larger room and we were allowed in to set it up for her with her belongings. The facilities provided were excellent, she particularly enjoyed the Scrabble club. The last two weeks of her life were not easy but I was allowed in daily and even my husband once to say goodbye. She recognised him which was wonderful. They rang my brother to suggest he might like to come. The staff could not have done more for her. They were also very supportive to relatives giving as much time as was needed to answer questions. I cannot speak more highly of Highlands. Mother was very lucky to have been there.

Highlands is a very friendly and caring residential home. Limiting the number of residents to 20 ensures a very personal service, giving peace of mind all around. Communication is excellent and family can rest assured that their loved ones are in good hands. Importantly too, it represents good value
in terms of fees, with resources being well managed as a not for profit organisation.

My mother was looked after so well by everyone at Highlands, all the staff are local people many have worked there for years and their children as well. They can't do enough. We didn't know what to expect but it exceeded all our expectations. Beautiful gardens to enjoy, great food and all the residents
are great company, especially over Sunday lunch. Nothing nicer than sitting in the conservatory having tea and homemade cakes with my mother and other residents. Lots of activities - book club, manicures, gardening, music, films, games. There's just a really nice atmosphere there. Lovely private rooms and nothing too much trouble for the staff. Our family can highly recommend Highlands to anyone thinking about residential care.

My mother lived here for 2-3 years after a stroke left her wheelchair-bound at the age of 92. All her needs were taken care of in a professional friendly manner. She had a light airy room with space for her personal furniture items.
The staff were consistently polite and attentive to her and us
as her family. They managed to give her last years, from an active lady to being wheelchair-bound, a great sense of dignity. We were able to visit at most times of the day, the tea-time cakes being a particular favourite of my sister's, and no friend to the diet conscious.
My mother was impressed with the loyalty of the staff, some working well into retirement age. I don't claim to know scores of other care homes to compare Highlands with, but I am completely confident that this home ranks as one of the best, not least for location, staff, food and commitment.

My Mother arrived at Highlands and was immediately welcomed into the home with warmth, care and enthusiasm. Highlands has a cosy family atmosphere, but most importantly the staff are the best thing about it. They all give exceptional attention and sensitivity to all the residents and my Mum would love
to chat with them, their humour and laughter brightening the dullest of days.
The meals are wonderful and I did start to time my arrival at tea time, so we could chat over the tea and cakes on offer! My Mother would always say how lucky she was that they had a room for her, and how fortunate she was to have on offer the gardens and far-reaching views of the Deben.

Current Review Score: 9.3 (9.265)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.3 (9.265) out of 10 for Highlands Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.7 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.565 for Highlands Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (64 Excellents x 5) + (41 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 108 Ratings = 4.565
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.7 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Highlands Care Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 = 3.7
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 24 registered maximum number of service users is 4.8, which has been reached with 9 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
