Located in Bere Alston in the beautiful Tamar Valley, West View is a peaceful care home with a lovely outlook. There are a selection of spacious rooms with ensuite wet rooms and smaller rooms some with ensuite and a few without. There is a passenger lift for ease of access to and from communal facilities.

West View is an accredited Butterfly Home reaching accreditation as excellent by Meaningful Care Matters. The home has two houses Robin House and Wren House which operate like extended family units where staff and residents live their lives together. Residents are engaged in meaningful daily activity from preparing vegetables to cooking, laying tables helping with laundry as well as have a lot of fun singing and dancing and being creative. As a family run home they offer a personal service. The home is highly recommended by all who have contact with them particularly for the friendliness and kindness of the wonderful staff team.

The team enjoy having fun and people certainly enjoy life here.

West View is a brilliant home for my Mum who has dementia and has been living there now for several years. I live hundreds of miles away so am not able to visit as often as my siblings but whenever I do visit her, I am always very impressed by the friendliness and professionalism of the staff. Dementia
is a very difficult condition to cope with but the staff are excellent and very caring and understanding when dealing with one of Mum's "episodes". It is very reassuring to know that Mum is so well cared for. West View and their staff set an extremely high standard, one that most care homes will never get near.

My mum, Barbara was a resident at West View from just before Christmas 2023 until she died in September 2025. I found the staff there to be so caring. They really got to know mum and her likes and dislikes and she was very happy there. When she arrived there she wasn't eating well and had spent the
majority of time in her room at the previous care home. At West View she gained weight and wanted to go to the lounge every day to be with the other residents. Whilst she didn't participate in all the activities, there was always something going on. What I especially liked is that staff took time to sit and chat with the residents which meant I knew mum wasn't lonely. Nothing was too much trouble. I would 100% recommend the Care Home to other relatives. The staff also go out of their way to make visitors/family feel welcome. They are a great team :). They looked after me so well when Mum was at the End of Life. I cannot thank them enough.

I thoroughly recommend West View. It is the only home that really feels like 'home' in my experience. The staff and residents are family, everyone is loved, whether they are relatives, friends, professional visitors, residents or staff.
The home is full of laughter and hugs. There is always something
going on - whether it is preparing the vegetables for the big Sunday roast, joining in with games, singing, doing quiz's or a trip out - my Uncle was exhausted when he first arrived as there was so much to do - he always sleeps well after his busy day!
I love visiting West View and spend many happy days there with the whole new extended family.

I visited several care homes for my wife, who has Alzheimer's, before deciding on West View, which struck me as the standout one. I've been particularly impressed by the staff, who are invariably helpful and cheerful. I usually get offered a cup of tea when I visit and am invariably made to feel welcome.
My wife is happy there and has a pleasant room with spectacular views. Our relationship is much better now than it was before she moved into West View. There always seems to be an activity going on, such as singing or a quiz. The relaxed and cheerful atmosphere comes from the top, and the managers are outstanding. The Butterfly Approach to the quality of life of people living with dementia seems to work well. Altogether an outstanding care home.

My mum has been coming to Westview for a while now for daycare. It was difficult to get her to adjust, but the staff showed her such care and kindness that she now positively looks forward to her visits. She enjoys her time there and has even started telling us what she did. It is a shining example
of Butterfly care and has given the family such satisfaction to know how well she is doing.
Reply from Diane Kehoe, Manager at West View Care HomeYour mum is such a pleasure to have visit us each week. She is incredibly helpful-always lending a hand with making the tea and washing up-but she's also great fun to be around. We always have a lovely time when she's here. Although my wife is a new resident at West View.she seems to be settling well.,this is helped of course by the attitude of the carers which I find exceptional. They are kind and caring and I find that nothing is too much trouble for them, even unusual requests. The food is varied and my wife appears
to enjoy her meals Her complexion has improved and she appears much healthier than when she arrived at West View .Up to the present it has been a positive experience for us and reassuring for me.

We can rest assured our mother is well looked after in a safe environment with clear procedures. The staff are always friendly, professional, kind and very welcoming. Our mother is treated as an individual with dignity and respect. There are plenty of stimulating activities to suit our mother's interests
which encourages her social interaction. When we speak to her or visit, she always seems to be taking part in activities. There is a good choice of nutritional, home cooked food and plenty of drinks which our mother enjoys. There is clear communication between the home and our family.

We would like to thank you and your family for entrusting her into our care. Best regards, Diane

West View is a wonderful home from home. All the staff are so caring and it's visible that all the residents are treated individually according to their needs and as if they are family.
I live 250 miles away and had looked at a few care homes near to me but once I'd been to West View, I knew it was
the right fit for my Dad.
Knowing that he's so well cared for has given me great comfort.
Reply from Diane Kehoe, Manager at West View Care HomeThank you so much for your lovely review. I'm delighted that your dad has settled in so quickly and is feeling content and at home. I am so eternally grateful to the staff at Westview for their kindness and care for Mum. Mum has Alzheimer's and the staff have been there to support her at all times. They are always a step ahead to foresee her needs and put plans in place to ensure her liberty and dignity are respected.

happy at Westview with a real sense of feeling safe and cared for. I cannot praise the staff enough for always going above and beyond. Thank you

If I can start by saying I no longer have to worry all the time about the standard of care and safety of my dear aunt. The home is always, warm, bright and welcoming. Friendly staff always doing things with and for residents. Good communications with myself and my sister as relatives. Lovely home cooked
food which we are always also offered. All found a very pleasant place to place to live in and visit.

My mother is extremely happy and contented living at West View. The home has always been welcoming and attentive, but since achieving 'Butterfly' status, care has gone to the next level. The atmosphere is lovely, staff are smiling and appear to love their roles. The standard and variation of food is
amazing. Person-centred care is of utmost priority. I have the advantage of being a former employee, and a relative, so I have in depth knowledge of how much effort and consideration in made and shown to the residents. A lovely home.

My grandmother passed away last month and was a resident in West View prior to this. I do not live locally but visited a few times a year - often with my young children (her great-grandchildren). The staff were always kind and attentive to all residents treating them with care and respect.
When my
grandmother was more able they would ensure she could partake in more physical activities and socialise. In her final weeks, they kept her comfortable and safe.

My mum was a resident at West View for nearly 2 years. The care was all we could have hoped for - kindness and dignity at all times. West View sets a standard to which all care homes should aspire.

Since my previous review, my Mother sadly passed six weeks ago. During the six weeks prior to her death, I visited twice daily, Mum was very strong and received 'end of life care' for six weeks. The care Mum received was second to none, her personal care was wonderful, I used to love the smell of 'Dove'
when I went in, her hair was always brushed beautifully, her skincare was faultless, never dry and moisturised regularly. The staff check pressure areas regularly and everything was charted. Always drinks to hand and everyone was so supportive towards me. One Manager said to me 'We will support you all the way and beyond'. I still visit weekly to play games, I enjoy it and the atmosphere is so uplifting with lots of laughter.
Every single detail of Mum's 'end of life' plan was implemented perfectly, both physical and spiritual aspects of her care. I can honestly say Mum was so blessed to have spent her last two years in West View.

My wife has been a resident here for about 16 months. I visit every other day as it is fifteen miles from our home address on busy and, at times, narrow roads. During these visits, I have been impressed with all I have seen, from the helpful and cheerful staff to the cleanliness of the buildings and
various rooms. The activities each day (one AM and one PM except Saturday and Sunday) are very welcome to the resident and better than I have seen in other care homes.

West View is perfect for my elderly mother. She has 24/7 care and individual attention to her personal needs, whether medical, emotional, physical, or social. The home is attractive, spotless, well maintained, with a beautifully kept garden available for residents' use. The food is delicious. There
are twice-daily activities, including exercise, craft, and gardening, outings to Dartmoor, social gatherings, and celebrations. There are regular 'church' services and fellowship meetings for those seeking spiritual support. Check out their Facebook page! Every resident is treated with respect and every visitor is welcomed. We are kept informed if there are any medical problems; they also handle hospital appointments. This is a family-run business but it feels like home. The staff is professional, polite, extremely caring, and always kind to both residents and visitors. It was very important to us to find a home where my mother would be happy and well looked after - we couldn't wish for better.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.588)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.588) out of 10 for West View Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 11 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 11 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.813 for West View Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (104 Excellents x 5) + (24 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 128 Ratings = 4.813
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.775 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for West View Care Home is based on 11 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 = 3.775
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 28 registered maximum number of service users is 5.6, which has been reached with 11 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
