Primley House offers high-quality residential care in a comfortable and homely setting. A focus on personalised care, providing the amenities and support needed to ensure every resident’s well-being and comfort. From tastefully decorated rooms to nutritious meals and engaging activities, prioritising each resident’s individual needs and preferences.

Commitment to excellence is upheld through regular quality assessments and inspections, ensuring consistently high standards of care. At Primley House, the team is dedicated to creating a caring, enriching environment where residents feel valued, supported, and part of a close-knit community.

Primley House was built in the early 18th Century and purchased in the early 20th Centry by Herbert Whitley, the creator of Paignton Zoo.

He spent considerable time and effort growing a collection of animals and plants, many of which were kept at Primley House.

With a growing private collection Mr Whitley agreed to take all the animals from Chessington Zoo when they needed to evacuate with the onset of the second world war. Expanding across the road from the original house, the zoo opened to the public in 1923 as Primley Zoological Gardens.

It is said that after clashes with the Inland Revenue over his refusal to collect 'entertainment tax' he closed the zoo, re-opening after the second world war as Paignton Zoo.

My mother has been a resident at Primley House for almost 2 years and we both feel fortunate that she came here. There is a really good atmosphere fostered by an excellent manager and supported by a cheerful, friendly and attentive group of carers giving it almost a family feel. The activities and entertainment
are well above the standard I associate with care homes and the communal areas are spacious and welcoming, including an attached hairdressing salon. The kitchen staff provide an excellent selection of meals and are flexible on timings and amounts. My mother, who always maintained she would not enjoy care home food, loves it. They also provided a cake and scones for the small birthday parties we organised. The dining room is restaurant-like with cloths on the tables and flowers. Even though my mother has no mobility, she is dressed each morning and taken to the dining room for breakfast.
I have no complaints about Primley House and am only too grateful that my mother is a resident here where she is comfortable and content and well looked after.

My dad has lived at Primley House for three years. It is a lovely home, and he is very well cared for. Nothing is too much trouble, and they all treat him with dignity and respect, but also love and understand his sense of humour. I can relax knowing Dad is happy and he enjoys the various activities
and the food. I would highly recommend it to anyone who has a relative needing care.

Mum was admitted to Primley House in early March 2019 following a month in hospital where she celebrated her 95th birthday. Unable to return to Supported Living, I looked at three care homes and fortunately there was a room available in Primley House.
Mum is physically feeling her age but mentally
alert and does not suffer from Dementia.
I am now retired but designed and implemented a scheme in Hampshire for the care of the elderly during my career. This won a Health and Social Services national award, I mention this as it makes me a somewhat discriminating Service User. I have found the quality of care at Primley House excellent and the respectful and helpful attitude of the Management has a cascade effect on the overall care provided. I have recommended Primley House to various friends and am comfortable about putting this review in the public domain. The care of our vulnerable elderly matters and this is a residential home where they are getting it right.

My mother-in-law has recently gone to live in Primley House and we have been very happy with how quickly she has settled in. We attribute this to the very kind staff and the friendliness offered at the home. She likes the food, the gardens and her room.
We are very pleased.

After my father passed away my mother was not able to care for herself. We all felt concerned with moving her into a 'home'. However, I can honestly say this has been a revelation - Primley House is wonderful starting at the top management down to all the staff, it is friendly, caring, lovely gardens,
good housekeeping and good food. I cannot think of a negative and as a family, we are very happy with every aspect of the care. I can recommend it highly enough.

Thank you so much to a wonderful team at Primley House. Your care, compassion, kindness and dedication to each and every resident is amazing. I cannot think of anywhere better for my Mum to have stayed for her respite. The food is brilliant, it is spotlessly clean and the room my Mum stayed in was lovely
and welcoming. You have such a wonderful atmosphere both inside and outside and the attention to detail is spot on. Thank you, each and every one of you.

Current Review Score: 8.3 (8.338)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.3 (8.338) out of 10 for Primley House Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 2 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.4 out of 5 from 2 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.957 for Primley House Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (22 Excellents x 5) + (1 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 23 Ratings = 4.957
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 3.381 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Primley House Care Home is based on 2 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 = 3.125
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 39 registered maximum number of service users is 7.8. 2 Positive Reviews ÷ 7.8 = 0.256
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
