Milford Manor is a specialist dementia care home for up to 30 people, set in a delightful location just a short walk from the River Bourne.
Widely recognised for its innovative approach to dementia, Milford Manor draws on the work of the specialist dementia centres at Stirling, Surrey and Bradford universities to translate their research findings into practical ways to help and support people with this illness.

The home is purposely designed to reduce any confusion or anxiety residents may feel – giving them the maximum freedom and choice in their daily lives, encouraging them to do as much as they can for themselves, whilst involving their families and friends as often as possible.

The manager has a specialist diploma in caring for people with dementia, whilst all of the staff receive specific dementia training and are supported by an experienced senior team including a registered mental health nurse.

The Review Score of 7.4 (maximum of 10) for Milford Manor is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 3.9 out of 5 from 2 Reviews over all time. This Average Rating is also the rating value for Milford Manor in Google's Search Results - more info

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.6 out of 5 from 2 positive Reviews in the last 12 months.

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating of all Reviews over all time. For each review the Care Home / service is rated Excellent, Good, Satisfactory, Poor or Very Poor on a number of areas eg Staff, Management etc. The Care Home receives points for each rating as follows: Excellent = 5. Good = 4. Satisfactory = 3. Poor = 2. Very Poor = 1. These points are added up and then divided by the total number of completed ratings to generate the average rating.

    The Average Rating of 3.818 for Milford Manor is calculated as follows: ( (10 Excellents x 5) + (1 Goods x 4) + (8 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 22 Ratings = 3.818

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 12 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with 'Extremely Likely' or 'Likely' in answer to the question 'How likely are you to recommend this Care Home to friends and family if they needed similar care or treatment?'

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 5 Positive Reviews, 3 points for the first Positive Review and then 0.25 Points for each of the next 4 Positive Reviews.

    2. 1 point is available for reaching a target number of Positive Reviews based on 20% of the number of registered maximum number of service users. If the target is partially reached then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home with 50 registered maximum number of service users has a target of 10 Positive Reviews, if it has 10 or more Positive Reviews it will receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews will receive 0.7 points.

The 3.583 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Milford Manor is based on 2 positive Reviews in the last 12 months and is calculated as follows:

    1. 3 + 0.25 = 3.25

    2. Target of 6 positive Reviews (30 registered maximum number of service users ÷ 5). 2 Reviews ÷ 6 Target = 0.333

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

Matthew Airey, Managing Director at Milford Manor responded to this review on 01 Feb 2017:

Thank you for your feedback on the card for this website which we provided for you. The team really do appreciate your positive support and comments on areas where you think there could be improvements.

I understand that our Executive Chef has called you directly and that you are happy with the outcome and actions taken. Thank you for sharing your in-depth knowledge on vegan diets which our Exec Chef found most helpful.

We are very sorry that you are disappointed with the in-house activities available. As you will be aware, there are specialist dementia activity people who visit the home at least weekly and the team conduct a range of other activities - usually in the afternoon. Milford Manor provides a highly specialist mental health and complex dementia care service and the approach to activities needs to reflect the specialist needs of the people we care for. We are constantly reviewing new techniques for individual and small group engagement, all of which have to be approached in a way that individuals can actually access and benefit from.

As an example; the team have just been on a specialist Dementia Pathfinders ‘Circle Dancing’ course specifically designed for supporting well-being, re-attachment and contributing to a sense of personhood as well as supporting mobility and, of course, just being fun. This will be incorporated into the activity programme. We are also looking at enhancing the afternoon period with additional specialist assistance in the area of meaningful activity engagement for individuals with significant degenerative cognitive impairment.

Turning to your ratings about facilities; specifically the bedrooms. Our aim is to make the bedrooms as personalised and welcoming as possible and the team work with families to achieve this in a way that enhances memory and belonging. The rest of the extensive communal space is specifically designed to support circular movement for those residents whose impairment has resulted in them living busy lives walking around; we refer to this as ‘walk with a purpose’. The home has significant material to support reminiscence and engagement through touch, smell, colour and light. This means that the home and bedrooms can be very individual - not to everyone's taste but presented in this way for a purpose which is based on sound research from the leading specialist university research centres (like Stirling University). Please do ask to speak to our Ops Director, who will be more than happy to discuss this with you.

Thank you again for your feedback - it really is appreciated, we hope our response has been informative and helpful.
