My dad moved into Castlewellan a year ago and was immediately made to feel at home and cared for. The manager and all staff show that they genuinely care about the residents. The food is traditional British fare and personal preferences taken account of. Rooms are small and include ensuite toilet/basin.
The single shower (one for 18 residents) has not been the problem we anticipated as times are scheduled and residents accompanied. The lounge, dining room and garden are all very pleasant. We have been entirely satisfied with our choice of this care home.

My father is a resident at Castlewellan House. He has been there for the last 18 months and has settled in very well. The staff are always attentive and thoughtful and very helpful. The residents all seem to get on very well. It is always very clean and tidy. My father always says the meals are very
nice. We are very satisfied with the home, care and staff.

My dad was a resident of Castlewellan for about 16 months. During that time he was happy and content there. Staff were pleasant, kind and caring and eager to accommodate us wherever possible to make dads stay with them a happy time. Staff were very approachable and nothing ever seemed too much for them.
The manager always made herself readily available to discuss any potential concerns (this was very important to us). I would have no hesitation in recommending the manager and her team to anyone looking for care facilities.

Recently mum has suffered problems with her catheter leaking, this has been distressing her. The staff have been caring and attentive. Mum has also had problems with low blood pressure, and again staff were very caring. Overall I am satisfied with her care.

After reviewing endless care homes in the local area, I felt Castlewellan House would best suit mom's needs. With just 18 residents, it has the intimate, homely feeling I know mom prefers, which allows the excellent staff to provide a more personal level of care. Any issues mom has had has been dealt
with immediately, on occasion calling for paramedics, making mom's welfare a priority, and keeping us informed at all times. Although mom has a hearing problem, the staff have shown a lot of patience and always treated mom with respect and dignity.

We recently attended the summer party at Castlewellan. Good food and drink (punch) and a BBQ, Excellent singer, games, etc.
The residents were well attended to by the staff and management, with the owners attending and joining in.
Mom is well looked after at the home, with any issues promptly attended
to.
All staff are very friendly and helpful.

My mother and my aunt have been in this home for 3 years. They have had a good standard of care and respect during their time here. When they first arrived it was during COVID times so the circumstances were difficult as regards visiting. The contrast now is overwhelming. There is a real open door policy
and I feel welcomed to visit at any time. The manager and staff are all caring and open to discussing any concerns I have. I would not hesitate to recommend the facility.

Current Review Score: 9.4 (9.419)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.4 (9.419) out of 10 for Castlewellan House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.519 for Castlewellan House is calculated as follows: ( (61 Excellents x 5) + (39 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 106 Ratings = 4.519
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Castlewellan House is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 18 registered maximum number of service users is 3.6, which has been reached with 9 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Registered Home Manager Joined: 2023

I have worked in the Care sector for 15 years to date starting with caring for and supporting individuals in their own homes with activities of daily living after several years working in the community I was promoted to Care Coordinator but found having an office-based role I missed having the connection with individuals who needed care and support. I moved into support work within care settings which specialised in Dementia Care as a Lead Care Practitioner moving up to Assistant Care Manager, I also have experience working in Care training and the development of Care staff spending several years working as an Assessor in Health and Social Care supporting learners to gain qualifications in Adult Care. My passion is person-centred care and providing an environment that promotes quality of life until the end of life ensuring all our staff at Castlewellan House support our residents with dignity and respect enabling them to maintain their independence. Castlewellan House is a warm and homely environment that welcomes all providing a positive atmosphere for our residents their loved ones and visitors.
