I asked my husband (Ed) how much he enjoyed his respite stay of one week. His immediate answer was 'I'll be going back'. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. I was well impressed with the bedroom, large and airy everywhere nice and clean. He will hopefully going back!

My mother was a resident for about 15 months. During that time, the care given to her has been exemplary, especially during the past couple of weeks when she 'end of life'. I could not have asked for anything better. She was treated with huge respect, and care was faultless. Staff sat with my mum when I couldn't be there, and even when she died, she was treated with such love and respect. The staff work very hard to provide appropriate food for individuals as well and to provide activities they can enjoy.

Poor cleanliness, staff turnover, and inadequate care for my mum who was there for two weeks and having two falls, resulting in the second fall she broke her femur and is now unable to walk. Call system not answered in a timely manner, only okay for residents with dementia who have no voice.

Mum has been a resident at the Yews for almost a year it took her a while to settle in but this is understandable due to her dementia. I am very happy with the care mum receives and she loves the staff. Mum is eating very well and has put weight on which she really needed and looks so much better than when she arrived. Moving the entrance for visitors is working a lot better also the new management are very friendly and informative. The home decor is brilliant but looked a bit tired around the life area upstairs. The Hairdressing Salon is a brilliant idea and is used weekly by my partner to do mum's hair.

My dad has been a resident of the Yews for nearly 2 years, and over that period has been calm, happy and well cared for. Even at busy times, you are welcomed and it’s lovely to see dad showing glimpses of his old self (I.e. having a laugh with the staff, pulling their leg) on visits - another sign of dad feeling at home. My dad has vascular dementia, and tends to struggle with hygiene (he simply forgets), so does need fairly regular support in terms of bathing, and dressing. No matter the time of day - he is always smartly dressed, and whenever he is running short of clothes or supplies, the Yews let us know so we can help them continue their good work. In terms of cost(s) - the Yews monthly rates are towards the lower end of care rates in Derby, for reasons unknown - their care and vibe being better than other homes twice the price (a fact based on experience). Are there any areas for improvement, well dad nails could be cut more frequently and Wi-Fi improved, but that’s it.

Reply from Maxine Booth-Isherwood, Manager at The Yews Residential Home

We really appreciate your kind words and it is so rewarding for the team to know that we are making a difference and dad really does feel at home. We have recently had a WIFI upgrade so hopefully, connectivity should improve. We focus on promoting personalised care, placing dignity, independence...

The Yews has become my Nana’s home a few years ago. It is friendly, caring, and all the staff respect and provide excellent care and support to both residents and their families. When it came to looking for a residential home for my nana, it was difficult for us, as a family, due to accepting Nana needed full-time support. However, we knew that “The Yews” was the place for her. I call my nana most weeks and it’s never an issue when I do, staff always take the phone to her and we chat. The Yews got my nana ready for my wedding day and I will be forever grateful for that. She is always very well presented in clean clothes and is very happy in herself. Since COVID started, this is the longest I have gone without seeing her and has been 2 years but reassurance is given that she is happy and content in her own little world and is not sad by not seeing me. I thank the staff for providing excellent care and making sure nana continues being funny and happy.

After breaking her leg, my mum needed some respite and assistance to get back on her feet again. Despite Covid19 complicating everything, the home bent over backwards to allow some visiting, gave me regular updates and looked after Mum really well. Mentally it was hard for both of us, but Mum said the carers were lovely, and she really missed them when she went home. I know first hand now how much emotional investment the owner and management put into this home and wouldn't hesitate to ask them to look after Mum again if we needed to.

Reply from Maxine Booth-Isherwood, Manager at The Yews Residential Home

A heartfelt thank you from everyone at The Yews. Thank you for selecting our home as your's and Mum's home of choice. It's good to know we have made a difference. We are always here to help in any way we can. Send our best wishes to Mum.

My mum loved living at The Yews; she called it home from the first day she went to live there. The care was excellent, her bedroom was beautiful, and she was able to take her own furniture with her. She always complimented the staff, saying how caring and compassionate they were. She would say how nice it was to have everything done for her, and she was treated like a queen. She loved to join in with all the activities, and bingo was her favourite.

Thank you so much for your kind words. We are so glad that your Mum felt she was home and enjoyed being with us. Our residents are at the heart of all we do, and to know we have made a positive difference to support your Mum to continue to live life to the fullest was both a pleasure and a privilege.

My uncle has been a resident here for 6 months now. During this time, I have been very impressed by the high standards of personal care given to him. All staff and management are caring, warm and friendly in their approach, both to residents and visitors alike. There is a real feeling of being part of a family here.

Choosing a care home for my Mother was a challenging thing to undertake. She was 92 years old when her health was such that she could no longer take care of her self. When looking at the options open to me I took into consideration location, size of the home, cost, reputation and one's own gut feeling having visited the Home and met the staff, seen the facilities and talked to some of the residents. In choosing The Yews I had some helpful information. Firstly a lady that my wife looked after for a number of years had become a resident there and we use to visit on a regular basis and I also know a number of District Nurses who gave strong recommendations for The Yews. My experience to date is that of entire satisfaction for my Mother's care. This is reflected in the attitude of the owners, the management team and the carers. The entire facility is kept spotlessly clean, the food is of a high standard and the activities lady is very good. All in all, a very good, well run Care Home.

The Yews has become my Mom’s home. It is friendly, caring, and all the staff respect and provide excellent care and support to both residents and their family and friends. This is due to the excellent example of leadership and support to staff provided by the owner and the manager.
A recent example of this was when my Mom became very unwell during December 2017. The staff contacted me as my Mom was adamant she did not want to go to hospital as she felt scared as she feels so safe and well cared for at the Yews.
As I live 400 miles away my daughter who lives in Derby was able to go and support the staff and paramedics.
My Mom had pneumonia and was very poorly in hospital for several days but as she recovered her main goal was to return to her home at the Yews and the staff who care for her so well. This gave her motivation and strength to complete her rehab and return to all her friends at the Yews!

This illustrates the commitment and safe care my Mom receives.
