The Chestnuts Retirement Home is a small family-owned business. They believe that all residents should be treated to the same high standard of care that you would want/expect for your own parents. The manager and owner is the third generation in the family business and her children, fourth generation, regularly pop in and say hi to everyone.

The Chestnuts Retirement Home was started 40 years ago and the owner and his wife even stayed at The Chestnuts when they needed care. The current manager is involved in every aspect of the home and knows all families and residents personally. The home is not a big corporate company, it is a small, relaxed, friendly home that truly cares.

The Chestnuts has an amazing staff team with long standing careers that have been with the company up to 25 years. They have a low staff turnover and a happy relaxed, homely atmosphere. All food is locally sourced and delicious with a 5* rating from environmental health.

They are very proud of the fact that they have remained covid free throughout the whole pandemic. They believe this is a reflection on the brilliant staff team they have.

The manager also works closely with the local community. Every few weeks the children from the local primary school and nurseries come and say hi. They offer regular trips to the local hairdressers, and they use the local butchers and grocery shop. Every Monday they offer escorted trips to all local amenities.

I found the staff charming, caring and efficient. My father is treated with respect and dignity. The accommodation is clean and comfortable - a home from home. I'd like to thank all the staff for the care and support they are offering my father.

I have visited the home on several occasions and have become familiar with the staff. They are a friendly and honest team who interact well with the residents and guests at the home. The home provides a variety of great activities and it’s nice to see the children visit from the primary school. The
people seem genuinely happy.

The staff are wonderful, caring individuals, they treat everyone, service users and relatives with respect. The meals are all home-cooked and look delicious. The rooms are kept beautifully clean and you can add your own belongings to make it homely and personal. Everyone can join in games if they wish,
go for trips out, have a walk around the village, do a bit of gardening, sit and read, there is also musical entertainment on a regular basis, petting animals visit. The home has a lovely friendly atmosphere.

My auntie took a fall and cracked her rib, the hospital said she couldn't go home and needed to be in respite care until she was back on her feet. We were very fortunate that the Chestnuts Retirement Home had a room vacant as their reputation in our village of Ruskington precedes them. My auntie is
a very private and independent lady so I knew it was going to be difficult for her to let people help her but she was treated with the utmost care, respect, patience and dignity. All the staff really do care about the residents, they are all very friendly, helpful and fun, nothing was ever too much trouble. There were various activities going on and entertainment for the residents and everyone was encouraged to join in. The food was fantastic, lots of homemade favourites which my auntie enjoyed! The atmosphere is a warm, relaxed and friendly one where residents are treated as individuals, it is definitely a "home from home", like one big family and the care given is excellent! A fantastic place!

Unfortunately, my mum only had three nights in Chestnuts Retirement Home, however, I cannot praise the manager and her team highly enough. From the first visit, the moving-in day, the compassionate care, homely feel and excellent food, to the task of notifying us of her death - they were all outstanding!
We just wish she had loved longer to enjoy being looked after.

The Chestnuts Retirement Home has a warm and welcoming atmosphere, clean and warm with a homely feel. Exceptionally well managed, all staff have made every effort to make my mum feel safe and secure. They are kind, polite and caring. Residents are encouraged to take an active part in decision-making
activity choices, food preferences and colour choices when communal areas need repainting. Anybody living here will feel included and respected, their voice matters and that is a joy to see.

This is a brilliant home. It's a small family-run home. It's small and just like a family. The care is second to none. I am incredibly impressed. I have been kept up to date with anything that happens. There is a great atmosphere. Food is homecooked and nothing is too much trouble. If someone isn't
well they will do the food the client wants. I am more than happy with everything. The staff are caring and friendly and would thoroughly recommend.

My auntie had lost some mobility and was becoming a bit lonely at times despite the family's efforts to keep her involved. This is until she got into the Chestnuts Retirement Home.
At Chestnuts she made new friends. She always ate well, always bragging about her meals!
When I think back, one of
the best things about the place was that it didn't feel like a normal, stereotypical care home, it felt like a bunch of lovely friends living together. The staff are really nice. The owner and her family spend a fair bit of time there and simply breathe life into the place.
There is always stuff going on. Always arts and crafts, celebrations, fun and games. I'd go as far as saying I can't wait until I'm old enough to move in!

Mum has recently joined this lovely, small home and is looked after very well. It's like a second family! Very homely with the gorgeous smell of home cooking every day. Well-balanced meals/fresh vegetables. Staff/carers are all kind, considerate, cheerful and understanding. Management involves residents
in decisions on their surroundings - decor, garden plants and activities. Residents are encouraged to join in various activities - music, crafts, games and gentle exercise. They enjoy each other's company. Local school children visit and friendly dogs can too! I thank everyone for the excellent care they give and recommend this lovely, small, well-run family home. Thank you.

Mum was originally admitted for respite care due to several falls at her own home. The staff warmly welcomed her to the home as it is located in the same village and went through admission questions accompanied by myself and my sister. It turned out that she was suffering from increasing dementia and
she is now a resident. She has good days and bad days but whenever we visited the staff were very helpful and informative. She did have a fall during the night one time which resulted in hospitalisation for her injuries but was welcomed back with open arms by the staff on discharge. We were really worried about her when we first saw her but after one week she was better than we had seen her since first admission. I have nothing but praise for the staff who always pay attention to Mum's needs and wishes. Mum loves the food which I gather is locally sourced and freshly prepared. Daily activities keep the residents happy. The manager is always open to suggestions for improvements.

Have just spent around 6 weeks in here after being unable to return home after breaking my leg and shattering my knee cap. I cannot stress enough about the excellent care I received. Nothing was too much trouble and all staff were friendly, helpful and kind. I was there over the Xmas period and they
made a real effort to make it a special time. The food although good home cooking was except, and well cooked. A huge thank you to all staff.

Current Review Score: 9.5 (9.500)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.5 (9.500) out of 10 for Chestnuts Retirement Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 5 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.5 out of 5 from 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 5.000 for Chestnuts Retirement Home is calculated as follows: ( (60 Excellents x 5) ) ÷ 60 Ratings = 5
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.5 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Chestnuts Retirement Home is based on 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.5
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 14 registered maximum number of service users is 2.8, which has been reached with 5 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

My grandad started the care home 40 years ago. I have known the home since being 4 years old. I often came in and said Hi to people, just as my children (fourth generation) do now.

I have been actively involved in the care home for 20 years and our ethos is 'everyone should receive the same high standard of care you would want for your own family. My nana and grandad stayed at the Chestnuts when they needed care and 100% of our staff said they would happily move their own parents into the Chestnuts if they required some care or respite.

Moving into a care home is a huge change and people fear the loss of control. We offer everyone complete environmental mastery over their own room. People can choose the decor and we encourage them to make it as personal and homely as possible with their own furniture and pictures.

I have 20 Years of experience in elderly care and have worked my way up the ladder from care assistant to my current position as deputy manager. I love this job and have wanted to do this since I was a little girl, I have worked with dementia, residential and end-of-life care, and all of them are rewarding. I think giving as much love, care and attention to those that need it, especially because we wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for them fighting for our freedom in the wars. I will forever be grateful and will ensure I give 110% to the families during these difficult times.
