I am so happy and relieved that my mother is in such a caring and professional environment. The building is immaculately clean and totally appropriate for her needs, and extremely well run. But above all, it is run by a team who genuinely seem to understand her needs, and treat her with such care and
attention. Over the 3 years that she has been here, I have seen such kindness and patience by all concerned, not just with her, but also with me, at what is a difficult time. I have absolute confidence that she is being looked after in the best way possible.

My mother-in-law has been resident at The Oaks for the past 20 months and I have to say the care she has received has been first class. We have found the staff to be attentive and professional in how they are supporting mum who has a form of dementia and could no longer live independently. The Oaks
has provided a safe and caring environment where she feels at home and not have to worry about those thing that were proving so difficult for her to manage on a daily basis. The Oaks benefits from being a purpose built facility in a vibrant sympathetic community setting. The layout of the main building is well designed with wide corridors, comfortable rooms and is securely maintained, food is of good quality and variety. We regularly visit and find staff are visible, friendly, empathetic and helpful. They work with us to best help mum and we regularly review her situation/care plan with them. We would recommend The Oaks to anyone facing similar decisions for their family members

My mother has been in The Oaks for two and a half years and it used to be a fantastic home. This year 2024, the staff have left in droves and staffing numbers have been cut so much that weekend cover is not acceptable. There is often agency staff on a weekend that do not know the needs or even the names
of the residents. Staff on a weekend are run ragged. Both of the ladies who did activities have left, residents are now spending day after day just sat in front of the TV with no interaction at all. My mother has declined as she has nothing to stimulate her. If I ask what the activity is that day, I am told that there isn't any, just the TV. The carers are fantastic. They work extremely hard and really do care about the residents but the management need to have a close look at how they are treating their excellent staff before any more leave and the residents suffer further.
Reply from Diane Atkinson, General and Registered Manager at The OaksThank you for your feedback. We are very sorry to hear these concerns and are currently looking into these. All our staff are allocated activities and we have a full time Activity Co-ordinator currently on-boarding with us. We are extremely proud of all our staff who work extremely hard to ensure all our residents have the best quality care and support. Our staff are acknowledged individually and or as a Team through our Values and Thank You Schemes.

My dad has been in The Oaks for two years having been a bungalow resident from the beginning. He has a comfortable room, with recently refurbished ensuite facilities. He has his own furniture and furnishings with makes it feel like home. He receives excellent, respectful and considerate care from the
hardworking, dedicated care staff whose workload only seems to increase. The facilities are good with activities for all the residents who wish to join in. Residents are able to access a small shop, hairdressers, health activity centre, library, workshop and coffee shop to meet up with the wider Hartrigg Oak community.
Reply from Alison Leaf, Registered Manager at The OaksThank you for such a positive review of your Dad's home and recognition of the care staff. We aim to ensure our residents feel safe and well cared for in a clean and homely environment and your kind review is encouraging - thank you.

My mother has been a resident in The Oaks for 18 months. It is evident that the current management team are determined to make changes to improve the quality of the lives of residents and where and when possible consider individual needs. THe permanent care staff do treat Mum with dignity and this caring
sensitive approach comes across and makes her feel cared for. They have a very demanding skilled job working with residents and relative and we very much appreciate all they do, often in difficult situations. I hope Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust do everything they can to retain sich quality of staff so they too are cared in the way they care for Mum.
Reply from Alison Leaf, Registered Manager at The OaksThank you for your positive comments and recognition in relation to the commitment of both care staff and management - very much appreciated.

I would like to say thank you to The Oaks. The care provided to my mother in the last year of her life was fantastic.
The staff at The Oaks are professional, warm, friendly and made my mother feel most welcome.
During my mother's last few days, the whole family were supported with love and attention

My mum has been at The Oaks for a month now and we could not be happier. She has settled in quickly and all the staff are incredibly kind and patient with her. She enjoys the meals, and there is a fantastic program of activities every day, which she enjoys joining in with. Her room is lovely, a good
size, and always immaculately clean. The grounds are also beautiful and we often enjoy a walk round the gardens or tea in the coffee shop. We feel extremely grateful that Mum is now living in such a lovely place and it has brought us great peace of mind to know she is being so well cared for and looked after. An absolute top-class example of a brilliant care home. Thank you.
Reply from Alison Leaf, Registered Manager at The OaksThank you for such a fantastic review and also sharing your experience. It can be an uncertain time for relatives when their loved ones move into a care home and we are pleased this has been a positive experience for both yourself and Mum. This review is encouraging and highlights how dedicated the staffing team are here at The Oaks - thank you, very much appreciated.

My mother is staying in the Oaks for a period of respite care after a short stay in the hospital - her second visit in the past year. Since the moment she arrived, she has been made to feel safe, loved, listened to and cared for - and assured that she can stay for as long as it takes. Knowing that she
can recover at her own pace and will be fully supported back into her own bungalow when the time comes gives her great peace of mind. Me too. I have spent a lot of time in the Oaks during my mother’s stay and have been struck and humbled pretty much daily by the dedication of the staff, from management to nurses to carers. What has also helped me, in particular, is being able to have a close dialogue with staff and management over my mother’s situation.
Reply from Alison Leaf, Registered Manager at The OaksThank you for your very helpful and positive summary of your and your mother's experience of the overall care delivery provided by the team at the Oaks. We as a team strive to assist residents to set and achieve goals one step at a time whilst maximising independence. It is a very positive review for the team who all work together to provide consistent and holistic care and support - thank you.

Three of my relatives have lived in the Oaks over the years. My mother is currently living there. She and I are very happy with her care. The management is excellent, and the carers are outstanding professional compassionate people. The integration of the Oaks within the wider retirement community of
Hartrigg Oaks is a big plus, with shared facilities like a gym and restaurants, and many activities and services to take part in. My mother maintains great social contact within the community. Definitely recommended.
Reply from Alison Leaf, Registered Manager at The OaksMany thanks for your encouraging and very helpful review of the Oaks and wider Hartrigg Oaks facilities. The Oaks care team are passionate in terms of care delivery and ensuring residents are engaged socially. The team work hard to provide all aspects of care delivery in a person-centred way - your positive review will let them know just how appreciated they are - many thanks for such a positive review of the Oaks.

I moved into The Oaks in June 2017. My mother had been here for nearly 9 years and so I was confident that it was a happy, caring home where residents were secure. The Oaks is set in well maintained grounds edged by a small stream with a Rose Garden, exclusively for the use of The Oaks. A variety of
activities are arranged including singing, music-making and armchair exercises. An added attraction is the rest of the community - 152 bungalows with residents over 60 - which also has a large range of activities (including Art, Bridge, concerts, French conversation and singing) and a fully staffed Health Activity Centre available to residents of the Oaks and meals in the restaurant where all food is freshly cooked. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the staff have kept us safe, contact with relatives has been organised and regular visits allowed within government guidelines. The staff are always cheerful, caring and patient. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Excellent activity facilitation for residents, which was maintained on an individual basis when residents were confined to their rooms during lockdown periods. Only one instance of resident dying with Covid, following outside admission, no transmission. Possibility to join residents from associated
bungalows for coffee or meal in restaurants. Aim for integrated living with active residents.

The gold standard of what a retirement home should be.
This home is unique - a mixture of active 55+ year olds and time needing more support. (Re The Oaks)

Current Review Score: 9.4 (9.388)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.4 (9.388) out of 10 for The Oaks is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 12 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 11 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.613 for The Oaks is calculated as follows: ( (106 Excellents x 5) + (24 Goods x 4) + (7 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) + (2 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 142 Ratings = 4.613
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.775 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Oaks is based on 11 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.025 = 3.775
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 43 registered maximum number of service users is 8.6, which has been reached with 11 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
