The staff are great. The building is a bit tired, the car park can be a bit of a nightmare, the temperature in the room is too warm 28 degrees, the toilet pan is also loose and trouble flushing could do with a wee freshening up.
Reply from Cassie Dunbar, Marketing coordinator at Greyfriars Care Centre

My mum was in Greyfriars from Oct to April 2022. She was admitted for end-of-life palliative care. Mum was bedridden and totally dependent on the staff in the home. We were promised she would have staff with her throughout the day keeping her stimulated. She was to be included in activities for example
getting her nails painted or someone reading to her. None of this ever happened. Staff was only with mum to wash and change her, other than that she was left on her own. Mum's positional changes were regularly late and she developed a bed sore after just 2 weeks. Her catheter was emptied into the basin used for washing her. The en-suite bathroom had no hot running water for over 2 months. The window catches never worked. Repairs were promised and never carried out. Mum was too frail to be moved to another care home. I would not recommend Greyfriars if your family member is bedridden. Mum was out of sight out of mind.
Reply from Care Service Director, Keane Premier Healthcare at Greyfriars Care Centre

We are extremely sorry that your experience at Greyfriars care home was not a positive experience; this is not the standard which we strive to achieve. Following your mum's passing, a formal complaint had been raised regarding your mum's care, a thorough investigation had been completed and we sent you a detailed response. Within this response, we highlighted areas for improvement which had been identified, lessons learned and our intended actions. I would like to thank you for raising these concerns and we welcome any feedback from residents or their family members, both positive and negative, as this feedback enables us to analyse areas of care and improve our service.

My father moved to Greyfriars Care Centre for two weeks of respite care while his long term care needs were being assessed. The manager and the staff were great, keeping me updated on how my dad was getting on and they looked after him very well. He looked better after just 2-days and they were very
helpful as I made arrangements to move him to a care home nearer to me for his long term care.

My mum is settled and seems happy. Recently I have noticed that the big TV in the lounge area has not been on as much and music has been playing. I feel this is better. Why not ask families and residents about their favourite music?
It's a pity that there is no secure outdoor space. My mum loved her
garden and I feel if she could go outdoors, safely, this would make her happier. The installation of a fence and lockable gate could be possible - cost?
Reply from Leena Domun, Home Manager at Greyfriars Care Centre

We are planning to upgrade the garden area with fencing and make it a safe and secure environment to enable our service users to use the facility. We are looking into activities and playlist for service users that would be meaningful.

My father has been a resident in Greyfriars care home since 4th September 2015. Dad has settled in and seems very happy. The staff are lovely and very approachable.
I see a difference in our dad he has company and interacts with staff and other residents. Dad has a lovely bright spacious room and
we have taken his own recliner chair from Home.
There was a manager in place when dad arrived in the home, she left the day dad arrived.
As far as I know there is no manager at present.
Reply from Gillian Aitchison, Home Manager at Greyfriars Care Centre

Hello and thank you for your review of our service. The management of the home changed on the 5th of September 2015. Hopefully, if you visit us now, you will see a huge difference in how the care home is managed and the changes that have taken place. Please feel free to contact me at any time.

Current Review Score: 8.3 (8.328)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.3 (8.328) out of 10 for Greyfriars Care Centre is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 2 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.5 out of 5 from 2 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.833 for Greyfriars Care Centre is calculated as follows: ( (21 Excellents x 5) + (2 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 24 Ratings = 4.833
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 3.495 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Greyfriars Care Centre is based on 2 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 = 3.125
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 27 registered maximum number of service users is 5.4. 2 Positive Reviews ÷ 5.4 = 0.37
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
