Joseph Lodge is a warm and welcoming care home for older adults, offering high-quality personal care to people with age-related needs, including those living with dementia. Set in a beautiful rural location just beyond the outskirts of Southend, the home benefits from excellent transport links. It is only a short taxi ride from Shoeburyness train station, and a local bus route stops directly outside the building.

The home features 39 bedrooms spread across the ground and first floors, including several larger rooms, two of which are ideal for couples. A lift provides easy access to the first floor, and every bedroom includes its own ensuite facilities for comfort and privacy.

Communal spaces are thoughtfully designed. The ground floor houses a spacious lounge-dining area adjacent to the kitchen, creating a vibrant hub for daily life. In addition, two smaller lounge areas offer peaceful spaces for private visits, relaxation, or participation in activities. Residents also have access to a private physiotherapist (available to book), as well as visits from a local chiropodist and hairdresser.

A fully equipped laundry facility on the ground floor provides personal and household laundry services for all residents. The home also boasts a large, wheelchair-accessible garden, which can be reached directly from the main lounge-dining area, an inviting space for fresh air and outdoor enjoyment.

The office, located near the main entrance, allows residents and families easy access to the Registered Manager.
Joseph Lodge is led by a Registered Manager (NVQ Level 5) and supported around the clock by a team of Senior Care Staff (NVQ Level 3), Health Care Assistants (NVQ Level 2), and Care Assistants who have achieved the Care Certificate. This dedicated care team is further supported by experienced domestic, laundry, and catering staff, ensuring a safe, comfortable, and homely environment for all residents.

Joseph Lodge is a very well organised home. Staff are very caring and friendly and make you feel welcome. The activities supplied by Heather are amazing, it's certainly noticed when she is not there. The facilities are very good - there us a hair salon which can be used by the family to wash their relatives
hair as well as a hair dresser every two weeks.

My mother, who is almost 100 years young, has been a resident in the home for a few months now.
When we came to view the home, we were met with smiles and courtesy by all the wonderful staff who gave as a complete tour. The staff are kind and caring and my mother always tells me how kind they are.
Her
room is both spacious, tidy and clean. Every time we visit her, which is several times a week, mum is always dressed with matching and coordinating clothes, not dressed in just anything will do. She is always clean and tidy.
We always get offered a cup of tea which is nice.
This is the third home mum has been in, the other two closed down, and it was a big shock for a lady of this age to comprehend what was happening but the staff were amazing and made her feel so welcome. A wonderful home for anyone needing or looking for the best in care and comfort.
Reply from Chris Smith, Home Manager at Joseph LodgeThank you for such a glowing review, we are so glad we are able to offer your mother such comfort and care. We really do appreciate your kind words and as always these will be passed onto the staff team.

A fabulous, warm, welcoming home, with lovely staff and spacious accommodation.
Mum's been there several weeks now and is very settled. The staff are obviously dedicated to residents which was clear from the moment we first walked in, randomly, and met one of the supervisors - given we arrived unannounced
it was an absolute pleasure to be treated so well from the get go.
There are comfy seats, private areas, a large dining table and plenty of space for families to visit their loved ones. Food is well presented, laundry done in-house and all is carried out with professionalism and a positive attitude - a testament to the excellent caring and thoughtful. The staff member who owns the home and takes an active role in its daily running. Thoroughly recommend.
Reply from Chris Smith, Home Manager at Joseph LodgeThank you for reviewing us, we are very grateful for your views. I will pass on your compliments to the staff team, who as always deserve the positive feedback.

My mum moved here a few weeks ago. She is bed bound so we were a little concerned that she may feel isolated.
She is flourishing, when I saw her on Sunday she was very chatty and said she was very comfortable and the staff are lovely.
We are really pleased with the care she is getting and the staff
are professional, caring and kind.
Mum is doing well here.
Reply from Jo Edmeades, Registered Manager at Joseph LodgeThank you for your kind words! We're glad to hear that you find the staff at Joseph Lodge caring and professional. They work hard to provide the best support and care possible.

The resident I visited with my friend was content and cheerful. However we had asked directions as no name was displayed near the road. The entrance was clearly marked and we were greeted quickly and in a friendly manner. Chairs skid a bit on the floor, as you get up the chair seems to slide back. No
drink offered but I have confidence if we needed water a carer would have brought a glass. We were only talking to our friend for 40 minutes or so.

Mum arrived at Joseph Lodge for respite care after 4 weeks in hospital, following a fall, resulting in a broken leg. Mum already had some minor mobility issues but was happy and coping well at home with family support for the usual bathing, meals, medication, shopping, etc.
After 3 weeks at Joseph
Lodge, now with greater mobility issues due to the accident, it became obvious that mum was not going to cope at home even with a care package in place.
From day one, the manager and the team at Joseph Lodge have been helpful, understanding, caring and compassionate, to both mum and family, with nothing being too much trouble.
Looking forward, we are very happy for mum to stay permanently now, with 24 hour care being key, with good food, nice room, a happy, friendly, safe and secure environment and she is settled and happy too.
Joseph Lodge has been refurbished by its new owners to high standard, being clean, tidy and spacious, with a dedicated team on hand, easy parking, we wish them well.

My Mum went to Joseph Lodge on 12th August from hospital as unable to care for herself any longer. The staff are brilliant, nothing is too much trouble. They keep me informed and give a comprehensive update whenever myself or family visit. The home has recently opened after refurbishment and is very
clean and the decor is pleasing.
At present activities, hair salons, etc are yet to be introduced as they are still filling up with residents.
Reply from Luke Baldock, Registered Manager at Joseph LodgeThanks, Jennifer, for the great review. Refurbishment of the hairdressing salon is about to start. Will keep you updated.

Current Review Score: 9.3 (9.295)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.3 (9.295) out of 10 for Joseph Lodge is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  1. The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 10 Reviews in the last 24 months.
  2. The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 10 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  1. 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months. The Average Rating of 4.545 for Joseph Lodge is calculated as follows: ( (74 Excellents x 5) + (25 Goods x 4) + (13 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 112 Ratings = 4.545
  2. 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5'). The 4.75 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Joseph Lodge is based on 10 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    1. 4 points are available for the first 20 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews, 0.05 Points for the next five Positive Reviews, and finally 0.025 Points for the next ten Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.050, 7th = 0.050, 8th = 0.050, 9th = 0.050, 10th = 0.050, 11th = 0.025, 12th = 0.025, 13th = 0.025, 14th = 0.025, 15th = 0.025, 16th = 0.025, 17th = 0.025, 18th = 0.025, 19th = 0.025, 20th = 0.025) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 + 0.05 = 3.75
    2. 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 39 registered maximum number of service users is 7.8, which has been reached with 10 Positive reviews. Points = 1
  3. When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.
  4. If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
