Job summary

Job Purpose

To support the kitchen team in a nursing home setting by assisting with food preparation, service, and cleanliness, ensuring meals are prepared and served safely, hygienically, and in line with residents’ dietary needs, including the IDDSI framework for modified diets and fluids.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with basic food preparation under the direction of the cook or kitchen supervisor
  • Support the preparation and service of meals in line with IDDSI standards (texture-modified diets and thickened fluids)
  • Serve meals respectfully, ensuring residents receive the correct diet and fluid consistency
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness in the kitchen, dining areas, and equipment
  • Wash dishes, utensils, and kitchen equipment
  • Follow food hygiene, health & safety, infection control, and safeguarding procedures
  • Assist with stock rotation, storage, and date checking
  • Dispose of waste safely and correctly
  • Communicate effectively with kitchen and care staff regarding residents’ dietary requirements
  • Report any concerns relating to food safety, diet compliance, or equipment to the supervisor

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Adhere to Food Safety and Health & Safety at Work regulations
  • Follow IDDSI guidelines and nursing home policies at all times
  • Wear appropriate PPE and uniform as required

Skills & Experience

Essential:

  • Knowledge or experience of working in a nursing home or care setting
  • Understanding of IDDSI or willingness to work strictly to IDDSI guidance
  • Ability to follow instructions accurately
  • Flexible availability, including weekends and bank holidays

Desirable:

  • Previous experience as a Kitchen Assistant in a care or healthcare environment
  • Food Hygiene Certificate
  • Formal IDDSI training
