Job summary
The Deputy Manager will support the Registered Manager in the effective leadership, management, and development of the residential/specialist care service. The role is pivotal in ensuring that high-quality, person-centred care is delivered consistently to all residents in line with regulatory requirements, organisational policies, and best practice standards.
The Deputy Manager will contribute to creating a safe, inclusive, and empowering environment where residents are supported to live fulfilling lives, achieve positive outcomes, and maintain dignity, choice, and independence. The post holder will also play a key role in staff leadership, quality assurance, safeguarding, and operational management, acting as the Registered Manager in their absence.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership and Management

Support the Registered Manager in the day-to-day management of the care home

Deputise for the Registered Manager as required, ensuring continuity of leadership and decision-making

Lead by example, promoting professional standards, accountability, and a positive workplace culture
-
Supervise, mentor, and support senior staff and care teams to deliver high-quality care
-
Assist in recruitment, safer recruitment practices, induction, and onboarding of new staff
-
Participate in staff supervision, appraisals, capability processes, and performance management
-
Identify training needs and support the development of staff through coaching and continuous professional development
-
Promote equality, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of service delivery and employment
Care Quality and Person-Centred Practice

Ensure all care is person-centred, strengths-based, and tailored to individual needs and preferences
-
Oversee the development, implementation, and review of care plans, support plans, and risk assessments
-
Ensure residents are actively involved in decisions about their care and support
-
Monitor daily practice to ensure dignity, respect, and compassion are embedded in all care delivery
-
Support residents with complex needs, including [learning disabilities, autism, mental health needs, behaviours that challenge, physical disabilities, or other specialist requirements]

Promote positive behaviour support approaches and least restrictive practices

Ensure residents’ rights are upheld and their voices are heard
Safeguarding and Risk Management

Act as a safeguarding lead or deputy safeguarding lead as required
-
Ensure safeguarding policies and procedures are understood and followed by all staff
-
Respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns, incidents, and allegations
-
Ensure incidents, accidents, and near misses are reported, investigated, and reviewed
-
Implement learning from incidents to reduce risk and improve outcomes
-
Ensure health and safety requirements are met and maintained across the service
Compliance and Regulatory Responsibilities

Assist in preparing for inspections, audits, and monitoring visits
-
Ensure accurate, timely, and compliant record-keeping and documentation
-
Support the implementation of action plans following inspections or internal audits
-
Ensure policies, procedures, and best practice guidance are embedded within the team
-
Maintain confidentiality and data protection standards at all times
Operational and Administrative Duties

Assist with rota planning, staffing levels, and deployment of resources
-
Support effective medication management in line with legislation and best practice
-
Oversee stock control, equipment, and environmental standards
-
Respond to complaints and concerns professionally, ensuring learning and resolution
-
Liaise with families, advocates, health professionals, commissioners, and external agencies
-
Participate in on-call duties as required
-
Contribute to service development, improvement initiatives, and organisational goals
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
-
NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care (or equivalent)
-
Willingness to work towards or already hold Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management
-
Significant experience working within a residential or specialist care setting
-
Experience in a supervisory, senior, or leadership role
-
Strong knowledge of safeguarding, care standards, and person-centred practice
-
Understanding of regulatory frameworks and inspection processes
-
Excellent communication, leadership, and organisational skills
-
Ability to make sound decisions under pressure
Desirable Criteria

Experience working with individuals with specialist or complex needs

Experience supporting or leading services through regulatory inspections

Medication management qualification
