Job summary

Joining our Bank of casual staff allows you to choose shifts that are convenient to you and required by St Monica Trust.

Hourly rate: £13.64 per hour, plus bank and weekend enhancements

Are you looking for a practical role where you can make a real contribution each shift? Where people recognise you, value your support and are glad to see you. If you're practical, approachable and enjoy variety, this could be a role where your contribution really counts.

Our Porters ensure the safety of our residents, staff and external visitors. They respond to incidents and emergencies and play an essential part in the successful day-to-day running of our service.

You don't need to have worked as a Porter before. What matters most is your attitude, your willingness to learn, and your ability to connect with people and understand the needs of older people.

This role is perfect if you:

· Enjoy staying active rather than sitting at a desk all day

· Like helping people and seeing the immediate impact of your work

· Are practical, curious, and happy to learn new skills on the job

· Want a role with both structure and variety

· Are looking for meaningful work, whether changing careers or returning to employment

· Like the variety of working different days and nights as part of a rota

People in this role often talk about how much they gain from it, from building confidence and practical problem-solving skills, to developing a strong sense of purpose and pride in their work.

You'll be:

· Friendly, approachable and upbeat

· Organised, flexible and able to prioritise tasks

· Comfortable working independently while being part of a small, supportive team

· Proactive, spotting what needs doing and getting on with it

· Understanding and respectful of older people's needs

What you'll actually do:

The days are varied and hands-on, so no two shifts feel the same. Your role will include:

· Answering calls and helping people reach the right person or department

· Operating intercom systems to allow access to visitors and contractors

· Carrying out basic maintenance (you'll learn skills that are genuinely useful in everyday life)

· Managing waste and helping keep the site tidy and welcoming

· Delivering post and newsletters

· Setting up rooms and furniture for activities and events

· Carrying out reassurance patrols and CCTV checks

· Making sure buildings are safe, secure and well cared for

· Acting as a Fire Marshal

· Transporting residents in Trust vehicles where required

· Being the welcoming, familiar face residents recognise and trust

What You'll Gain from This Role

You build genuine relationships with residents who look forward to seeing you. Often, you'll be called upon to help with something small, switching on a TV or fixing a simple issue and the relief and gratitude you receive for helping can be huge.

There's also a strong sense of community among staff. Departments support each other and work as one team to make sure everything runs smoothly for residents.

You'll learn practical skills, gain confidence, and go home knowing you've made someone's day better, sometimes just by being there.

This role can be physical and busy at times, and it's not always glamorous, but it is meaningful, rewarding and built on real human connection. Each site runs like a well-oiled machine, and being part of that brings genuine pride.

Shift Patterns:

To keep the service running smoothly, our Porters work on a rolling rota: 6am-2pm, 2pm-10pm, and 10pm-6am.

*Please note that a full UK driving licence is required for this role*

If you enjoy helping others and want work that feels worthwhile, this could be a role where you truly make a difference.
