Ken joined us as a Resident at The Beeches in April and brought with him his beautiful collection of books on American history.
Ken was keen to share his collection and was touched when we decided to dedicate a section of the Central Park Lounge, naming it The Ken Green American Library.
Some words from Ken
My interest in American history began when I was a young soldier and was posted to the British Joint Forces Services Mission in Washington DC in 1953. The best posting the National Service Men ever had!
On returning to civilian life, I joined the (BOAC), British Overseas Airways Cooperation, later to become British Airways. This gave me the opportunity to travel frequently to visit family members in both the USA and Canada. During these visits, I acquired at least one book on my favourite subject reflecting the various aspects of history and life in North America.
Perhaps the mainstay of the collection is the ‘Chronicle of America’ which reflects life year by year from the early years and up to date. The collection also includes the writings of Pierre Berton the French Canadian Historian and author and Bernard Cornwall the English TV Producer and Writer, depicting in two of his books which reflect a colourful image of life in the 1770’s in British North America.
When the home is fully open again we would love to invite local schools and colleges to use the space to study, enjoy the books meet with the lovely Ken who is more than happy to exchange knowledge.
