Residents at Hatfield Peverel Bupa Care Home in Chelmsford recently enjoyed an animal therapy session with Pinky and Perky – two friendly piglets.
Pinky and Perky visited the communal lounge, where residents made the most of the occasion, spending the afternoon stroking and playing with them. The four-legged guests also visited residents in their rooms, where they got to ask their handlers lots of questions about piglet welfare and care.
The visit was arranged by the home’s activity coordinator as a mood-boosting activity, stimulating all the senses.
Teresa Grana, a resident at Hatfield Peverel, commented: “It was a lovely afternoon and I really enjoyed having a cuddle with the piglets. I hope they come again soon.”
Pinky and Perky the piglets were provided by Performing Pets, a local company who facilitate wellbeing-orientated animal activities. The company has many years’ experience in providing animals with the best standard of care.
Cristina Matei, Activity Coordinator at Hatfield Peverel, said: “It was wonderful to welcome Performing Pets to Hatfield Peverel for our animal therapy session. The afternoon was a great success. Everyone enjoyed meeting the piglets and it was a lovely experience that our residents haven’t stopped talking about. Animal therapy sessions have many benefits for boosting well-being and improving social interactions and this is notable in our residents following a session.”
As the event was such a success among staff and residents, the home hopes to plan more animal visits over the next few weeks.
