Supporting the Wellbeing of Our Residents and Teams

Last Updated: 11 Oct 2024 @ 00:00 AM

At Westgate Healthcare, we believe that mental health is just as important as physical health, especially within our care homes. As we recognise World Mental Health Day, we reflect on the significant impact that good mental health has on everyone in our community—both the residents who trust us with their care and the dedicated individuals who work tirelessly to support them.

Prioritising the Mental Health of Our Residents

Mental health is a key aspect of overall wellbeing, particularly for those living in care homes. Many of our residents face unique emotional challenges such as feelings of loneliness, grief, or adapting to changes in physical health. It’s our responsibility to create an environment where residents feel supported, heard, and connected.

Each of our homes fosters a warm and compassionate community where residents are encouraged to express themselves. We regularly organise a variety of activities—creative workshops, pet therapy sessions, social events, and gentle exercise classes—designed to promote mental stimulation, engagement, and emotional connection. These activities provide our residents with a sense of purpose and belonging, which is crucial for maintaining a positive outlook on life.

Equally important is creating space for open conversations about mental health. Regular one-to-one chats between our care teams and residents help address any feelings, concerns, or anxieties. By giving every resident the opportunity to share their feelings, we can offer the emotional support they need to feel secure and understood.

Supporting the Mental Health of Our Team

Caring for others is a deeply rewarding job, but it also comes with emotional and physical demands. At Westgate Healthcare, we are committed to supporting the mental wellbeing of the people who dedicate themselves to providing exceptional care to our residents.

To help foster a culture of openness and support, we value the voices of our team members and provide opportunities for them to share feedback, concerns, or ideas. Dani Cihak, our Employer Brand Executive, plays a key role in this. Acting as a confidential listening ear, Dani is available to any team member who needs someone to talk to, offering a private, safe space to discuss both personal and professional concerns.

For World Mental Health Day, Dani spent the day at one of our care homes, walking the floors, speaking with team members, and offering one-to-one confidential talks. This personal approach ensures that every individual feels heard, valued and supported. We believe that feedback from our team members is essential to making our care homes and head office even better places to work. By listening to what truly matters to our teams, we can continue to create a positive and supportive working environment for everyone.

Celebrating and Appreciating Our Team

We believe that recognition and appreciation play a crucial role in supporting mental wellbeing. At Westgate Healthcare, we regularly celebrate our team members' long-time service milestones, making sure their dedication and hard work are acknowledged and appreciated. Our Employee of the Month awards highlight outstanding efforts and contributions, and we take every opportunity to celebrate personal milestones like birthdays to ensure everyone feels valued.

In addition, we offer our team members Happy Boxes—thoughtful packages filled with treats—as a small but heartfelt way to say thank you for everything they do. These tokens of appreciation go a long way in boosting morale and showing our gratitude for their commitment and compassion.

Creating a Culture of Care

At Westgate Healthcare, our approach to mental health is guided by empathy and a deep commitment to care. Whether supporting residents or recognising our teams, wellbeing is at the heart of what we do.

This World Mental Health Day, we reaffirm our dedication to fostering a nurturing environment where both residents and team members can thrive. Together, let’s champion mental health and create spaces where everyone feels valued and supported.
