"Staff are like family." Colinton Care Home's glowing inspection report

The care team at Colinton Care Home in Edinburgh are delighted to have received ‘Good’ ratings in all five evaluation areas following their recent inspection by the Care Inspectorate. The care home in Spylaw Road, which provides residential, nursing, dementia, respite and end of life care, was praised for the “Compassionate care and support and warm, encouraging, positive relationships between staff and people using the service.” The report was based on an unannounced inspection from the Scottish social care regulator. The home received scores of ‘Good’ in all evaluation areas; ‘How well do we support people's wellbeing?’, ‘How good is our leadership?’, ‘How good is our staff team?’ ‘How good is our setting?’ and ‘How well is our care and support planned?’ The Care Inspectorate reported that: “The home had a nice, relaxed and homely feel. Staff knew people well and all enjoyed friendly interactions. People were being encouraged to enjoy opportunities to engage in a range of activities which were meaningful to them. People were able to choose how to spend their day, and this meant they were listened to, and treated respectfully.” The report also noted that: “There was a varied menu on offer and staff were knowledgeable about people's needs and preferences. Visual choices were offered, which helped people who had memory difficulties. It was positive to see staff encouraging people to eat their meals together in the dining room, staff sat alongside people to provide reassurance or to assist people with eating. This inclusive atmosphere provided natural prompts and encouraged people to eat and drink well.” Residents told inspectors "I like it very much here; the staff are very good to me", and "staff are friendly and attentive, they are like family". The home’s manager, Elizabeth Cass, said: “Everyone at Colinton Care Home is so thrilled with this achievement.
