Fern Brook Lodge residents ‘go back to school’ during reminiscence session

Fern Brook Lodge care home residents went ‘back to school’ for a day during a fun, interactive reminiscence session.

Jan Millward from Rural Rhymes and Reminiscing led a school-themed session for the residents at the care home in Gillingham in partnership with the home’s in-house activities team.

Residents could choose school uniform-themed items to wear and chatted about their memories of their school days, before having a mini game of lacrosse.

The care home, which is operated by not-for-profit charity, Care South, provides residential, respite, and dementia care. A dedicated, in-house activities team organises a daily programme of events to bring residents together to socialise and build friendships.

Fern Brook Lodge care home is proudly supporting ‘World Alzheimer’s Month’ throughout September with a range of activities, including visits to farms, live music performances, and craft sessions, as well events open to the local community.

Outside visitors can enjoy complimentary cakes and hot drinks while experiencing the home’s warm and friendly atmosphere at Welcome Wednesdays sessions taking place from 2pm to 4pm each week.

Fern Brook Lodge also hosts Memory Café sessions every Thursday morning from 10am to 11 am for people living with dementia and their carers. There is no need to book - just drop in on the day.

Fern Brook Lodge benefits from a large garden area which offers a sensory space for residents, including those living with dementia or a sensory impairment. It’s also the perfect setting for residents to enjoy a host of garden parties and barbecues to make the most of the sunnier weather, with friends and family always encouraged to join in the fun.

Care South is a leading provider of high quality residential and home care services across the south of England. The not-for-profit charity runs care homes in Dorset, north Devon and Somerset, and care at home offices covering Dorset and Somerset.

Earlier this year Care South received the Hennell Award for Innovation and Excellence in Dementia Care from the University of Worcester’s Association for Dementia Studies, recognising its in-house Dementia Care Coach training programme led by Karen Hodges, Group Dementia Lead. Staff across all homes and care at home offices have completed the training, with Dementia Care Coaches supporting colleagues, residents and clients to enhance dementia care and wellbeing.
